Code:
2-13-NYG33 (1:18) C.Pickett pass to B.Lloyd to NYG 2 for 31 yards (G.Wilson).
PENALTY on SF-A.Clement, Offensive Holding, 10 yards,                          enforced at NYG 33
                  No Play.

Thornton might keep Plummer's job with Niners

Posted: Monday November 7, 2005 10:04PM; Updated: Monday November 7, 2005 10:04PM

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- One cornerback represents the questionable decisions and foolish expenditures of the San Francisco 49ers' previous management. The other cornerback might be the smartest personnel acquisition yet by the club's new bosses.

So guess which cornerback probably will get the starting job when both players are healthy?

Longtime starter Ahmed Plummer might not be back with the 49ers' first-string defense if he returns as expected from ankle surgery this week. Instead, free-agent signee Bruce Thornton is expected to keep the starting job he seized while Plummer recuperated from ankle surgery.

Thornton emerged while Plummer was out with a major injury for the second straight year -- and coach Mike Nolan said Monday he expects to keep Thornton alongside Shawntae Spencer in the starting lineup Sunday at Chicago.

Jennings out for season
Niners tackle has surgery on right shoulder
Posted: Wednesday November 9, 2005 4:22PM; Updated: Wednesday November 9, 2005 4:22PM

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Left tackle Jonas Jennings will miss the rest of the San Francisco 49ers' season after surgery on his right shoulder.

Jennings, who got a seven-year, $36 million contract as the 49ers' biggest offseason free-agent signing, played just three games before being sidelined by a torn labrum. He also missed most of an early loss at Philadelphia after taking a blow to the throat.

He sat out San Francisco's last five games in an attempt to heal his shoulder, but surgery Tuesday revealed too much damage.

Anthony Clement has struggled as Jennings' replacement, but is expected to start again Sunday when the 49ers visit Chicago. San Francisco (2-6) has lost six of seven games.
Comme l'a écrit Dr Z : "Tough to make it without offensive tackles".
T'as rien d'autre dans ton playbook, McCarthy?? [Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 13 No3

It's up to others if Smith will start
By Art Spander, STAFF WRITER

SANTA CLARA — Alex Smith is finally without a brace and without pain. Whether he once again will be the 49ers' starting quarterback is now up to the doctors and the coaches, in no particular order.
Smith, who sprained his right knee against the Washington Redskins, Oct. 23, said he was still wearing the brace when he threw about 60 passes earlier on Monday and did some jogging.

The No.1 pick in last April's draft, Smith started two games, Indianapolis and Washington. After the injury, he was replaced by Ken Dorsey for Tampa, and when Dorsey sprained his left ankle, Cody Pickett took over.

Pickett played acceptably against the New York Giants, but two days ago in the high wind at Soldier Field completed only one pass in the 17-9 loss to the Bears.

"I'd have to be 100 percent to play," Smith said. "It's their decision to make. I've been running for two weeks, but mostly straight ahead. The last four, five days I was going some change of direction, putting more stress on it."

Dorsey apparently was well enough to start at Chicago but had not practiced during the week.

"We do have to establish a guy," Dorsey said, "because you want consistency, especially at quarterback. If there are doubts, you go with the one who has practiced."

Pickett said he "didn't take advantage of opportunities" against the Bears, especially when the Niners had the ball on the 2, first and goal, in the fourth quarter. He tried a quarterback keeper around right end but was stopped at the 1. Then consecutive penalties moved the ball back to the 11.

"(Brian) Urlacher reacted well," Pickett said of the Bears linebacker, "but I needed a better play fake. I took the wrong step away from the center. If I had made the right one, there would have been nobody out there to get me."

Dorsey to start in place of ineffective Pickett
Associated Press

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Ken Dorsey will get his second start of the season Sunday for the San Francisco 49ers, who hope their fourth quarterback change in six games will breathe some life into their floundering offense.

The 49ers (2-7) haven't scored a touchdown in 39 straight possessions -- more than three games -- and have just eight offensive TDs all season. None of the four quarterbacks on their roster has thrown a touchdown pass this season, and the offense has managed just 1,957 yards in nine games.

Dorsey went 7-of-18 for 40 yards in his first start against Tampa Bay, but left in the fourth quarter with a sprained ankle. Cody Pickett finished San Francisco's win over the Buccaneers and started the next two games, but is just 14-of-35 for 140 yards and two interceptions.

No. 1 draft pick Alex Smith is expected to be Dorsey's backup, but isn't ready for a full week of practice after missing the last three games with strained ligaments in his knee. Smith, who threw five interceptions in his two starts before getting hurt, has a 17.5 passer rating -- even worse than Pickett's 28.3 and Dorsey's 47.0.

"Hopefully we can get back to having some fun and scoring some points," said Dorsey, who started seven games for San Francisco last season. "It's not a competition. As a group, we all have a lot of respect for each other. We all like each other. We prepare together and go into every game together."

Tim Rattay, who was traded to Tampa Bay during the Niners' bye week, threw all five of San Francisco's TD passes this season. The 49ers have managed just 701 yards in four games since his departure, and Joe Nedney's 10 field goals are their only points in the last three games.
Euh... [Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 13 Alandon ?

Citation :
The 49ers also promoted rookie Adam Snyder to the starting lineup at left tackle, replacing struggling veteran Anthony Clement.

Snyder, a star left tackle at Oregon who started at right guard for the 49ers last week, will attempt to fill in for Jonas Jennings, the $36 million free-agent signee who played just parts of three games before going on injured reserve last week with a shoulder injury.
Citation :
Rookie Ben Emanuel, a fifth-round pick waived by Carolina and signed to San Francisco's practice squad last month, will start at safety in place of Tony Parrish, who's out for the year with a broken leg.
[Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 13 Siffle

Ken Dorsey [Finally a winning streak!]
[Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 13 Icon40
[Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 13 Drink

Game grades

Offense: B

The 49ers actually had a passing touchdown, their first in six games. In fact, Brandon Lloyd's 22-yard TD catch in the fourth quarter was the first of any sort for the team in over 200 minutes of football. Coaches took the leashes off the offense, allowing Ken Dorsey to throw often and even to throw deep. Rookie Adam Snyder's play at left tackle allowed Dorsey the time to throw and the offense to function like a complete NFL offense. Imagine that.

Defense: B

The piecemeal secondary played great. Defensive backs hounded the Seattle receivers, playing press coverage for most of the game. Strong safety Ben Emanuel made a seamless transition in replacing Tony Parrish as the strong safety, and he nearly had an interception. The Seahawks have scored 31 points or more in four of their last five games but were held to 27 in this one. Running back Shaun Alexander got his yards (115 on 24 carries), but for the first time this season, the 49ers had more passing yards than the opposition.

Special teams: C+

Andy Lee put on a show with his net average of 40 yards and hang times mostly over four seconds, including one of five seconds. However, returner Rasheed Marshall's second fumble in two games was turned into a costly field goal.

Coaching: B

During a third-quarter series, a fade route in the corner of the end zone to Lloyd was ruled incomplete even though Lloyd looked like he was pushed out by cornerback Marcus Trufant, who had his hand on the side of Lloyd's helmet. But the coaches did not seek a review. Then on 3rd-and-goal from the 3, they tried a quarterback draw with the slow-footed Dorsey. But those goofs were superceded by the coaches' ability to get replacements ready, including running back Maurice Hicks, Emanuel and Snyder.

Star pupil: Brandon Lloyd

Lloyd had his most complete game. He blocked down field, caught a slant pattern in traffic and made another one-handed grab. He caught seven passes for 119 yards and, of course, a touchdown.

Next week's assignment: at Tennessee

The 49ers made progress in this game; can they continue it against the struggling Titans on the road?

A spirited crowd fell silent when defensive end Bryant Young didn't get up and held his knee in the middle of the field. The 49ers' defensive leader exited with a high ankle sprain and possibly knee damage.

He returned for one play after being taken to the locker room for treatment. Bryant watched the second half from the sideline. "If it was just my ankle, I would been OK to play," said Young, who will have an MRI exam on the knee today.

Young hopes to not be the 10th member placed on the team's season-ending injured reserve list.

What are the 49ers waiting for?

By Ann Killion
Mercury News Staff Columnist

NASHVILLE - Forgive me for being obtuse, but after 11 games I'm not quite sure what the 49ers are trying to achieve this season.

Ostensibly the goal is to win football games. But the 49ers just aren't very good at that. On Sunday, they rebounded from their narrow loss to the NFC's best team with an ugly loss to one of the AFC's worst.

Even sunny Mike Nolan couldn't call the 33-22 loss to the Titans "progress.'' He did, however, claim it was not a step backward.

"No, because I thought we played extremely well in the first half,'' Nolan said.

Drat that NFL rule that makes a team play two halves of every game!

So given the foregone conclusion of another hideous losing season, shouldn't the 49ers' next goal be developing their rookie first-round quarterback? The guy they are guaranteed to pay $24 million? The guy they still don't know much about?

This is not an indictment of Ken Dorsey, who played admirably Sunday. He completed 23 of 43 passes for 192 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions -- one of which clanked right off his tight end's hands and wasn't Dorsey's fault.

Dorsey was the victim of two things: a porous offensive line that allowed him to be smacked around on almost every play and some odd calls by offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy -- whose strategy didn't really seem to be about winning the game until there were about three minutes to play and it was already too late.

Despite Dorsey's play, when the score got out of hand at 33-14 one would have thought Alex Smith might have made an appearance.

One -- as in even the coach. The thought of inserting Smith crossed Nolan's mind.

"On my part, yes,'' Nolan said. "I didn't carry it any further... I just decided to stay with what we had.''

But now, Nolan concedes, the quarterback question is again open for debate -- a weekly occurrence for the 49ers. He and his staff will talk about it Tuesday. And really, what's left to decide? Is trying to beat a lousy Arizona team that much more important than developing your biggest investment?

The 49ers are headed for another really high draft pick. Sunday's game might have eliminated the Titans -- who won for the first time in six games -- from the race. Still in the running: the Jets, Houston and Green Bay.

Even though John York might not want to pay another high draft pick, he's going to get the opportunity. Which is why it would be a heck of an idea to find out a little bit more about the 49ers' last really high draft pick. Is Smith going to be the guy? Is he going to be able to step in next year?

Smith -- who started two games this season and played in part of another -- spent only two years at Utah playing out of the shotgun in a spread offense in the Mountain West Conference. He has a lot more ground to make up than the average rookie quarterback. And it seems he could benefit -- now that he's healthy -- from the Peyton Manning philosophy of "Play... play, play, play, play.''

The counter argument is that playing behind the 49ers' offensive line is a recipe for crushed confidence and career-ending injury. That is a concern, but will the 49ers' line be much better next year? Will Smith keep sitting then?

Another counter argument is that every win will be good for the growth of the 49ers and the team has a better chance to win with Dorsey. But that didn't happen Sunday in Tennessee.

The 49ers played well in the first half, leading 14-9, scoring on offense and defense and controlling the time of possession.

But the Titans came roaring back in the third quarter, as Steve McNair led his team on three touchdown drives in the first 10:06 of the second half.

Meanwhile, the 49ers were lifeless offensively, failing to get a first down on eight consecutive possessions and running 20 plays for 33 yards.

On the 49ers' second possession of the fourth quarter, McCarthy called three consecutive running plays to Kevan Barlow, which gained 9 yards and ate up two minutes. Those were minutes the 49ers could have used late in the game as they frantically tried to score after recovering an onside kick.

Nolan praised the team for keeping "it close -- we get down to the end, it's in the 20s and we got an opportunity to win the game.''

So why didn't they have the win-the-game mentality earlier in the quarter, rather than calling three running plays that looked like a white flag?

"I don't have a good answer for you,'' he said.

Nolan has done a good job of spreading the happy vibes through the locker room. Dorsey said, "I thought we called a great game... We were still in the game. We had an opportunity to win the game.''

Actually, after McNair's explosive third quarter, the 49ers really didn't have a chance to win the game. But never mind the facts. The 49ers are very good at looking on the bright side.

But some of the rest of us can't find the bright side. There's only one thing that would save this season from being an utter waste of time: it's time for Smith to play.
SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 13 Pendu1

Alex Smith to start for 49ers

- John Crumpacker, Chronicle Staff Writer
Monday, November 28, 2005

San Francisco's quarterback of the future is also its quarterback of the present.

Coach Mike Nolan announced Monday that No. 1 draft pick Alex Smith will be the starter for the remainder of the season, barring injury, starting Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals at Candlestick.

"That's the direction we'll go from this point forward," Nolan said. "He is healthy now. That will not be an excuse. We did not draft Alex to sit the bench. If the expectation is your quarterback takes you to the promised land, that's not going to happen. It takes a team."
(...)
Snapping the ball to Smith on Sunday will erstwhile right guard Eric Heitmann, not Jeremy Newberry. Nolan announced Monday that Newberry has been placed on injured reserve with knee and shoulder problems, thus ending his season. Rookie David Baas will step in for Heitmann at right guard.

Newberry will have surgery on his arthritic knee either later this week or next week.

go 49ers.

[Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 13 Zinzin

Citation :
Warner threw two interceptions, and the Cardinals managed just 65 yards rushing while failing to score in all three of their trips inside San Francisco's 20. Against any other opponent, it might have cost them.
Tout est dit.
