Reduced to one healthy quarterback, the 49ers on Tuesday signed veteran free agent Jesse Palmer, who played four seasons for the New York Giants before he was released this summer.

Rookie Alex Smith, the top overall selection in the 2005 draft, is battling a sprained right knee. Backup Ken Dorsey, who started last week's game, has a left ankle injury and is in a walking boot. San Francisco may be forced to start Cody Pickett, who finished up last Sunday's victory over Tampa Bay, in this weekend's game against the New York Giants. He would be the fourth different starter employed by San Francisco this season.

Coach Mike Nolan is expected to decide on a quarterback, with the odds heavily favoring Pickett, who has never made a regular-season start, on Wednesday.

Palmer, 27, appeared in eight games, with three starts, in four seasons with the Giants, and was arguably more celebrated for starring in the reality series "The Bachelor" on ABC than for anything he accomplished on the field. He completed 63 of 120 passes for 562 yards, with three touchdown passes and four interceptions. All but four attempts came in the 2003 season, when he started in place of the injured Kerry Collins.

Most recently, Palmer, a former University of Florida player chosen by the Giants in the fourth round of the 2001 draft, auditioned for the Tampa Bay Bucs after starter Brian Griese was injured. Tampa Bay traded for San Francisco's Tim Rattay, however, instead of signing Palmer.

T'inquiete pas, la victoire inattendue et inesperée face aux Bucs ne m'a pas regonflé à bloc (vu la manière, y'a pas intérêt) mais au moins, (1) on fera pas pire que l'an dernier et (2) y'a 3 ou 4 équipes encore pires que nous.
Et avec des matchs face aux Cards, Texans et autres Titans, on peut même viser le 4-12. YEAH!!!!

Sinon pour la bio, ils ont oublié de parler de son passé de rodéo-iste.

However, he can stand in and take the big hits....He is a very naturally gifted player, but could improve on his throwing mechanics, although it is not a major problem....There are no physical or athletic limitations to hold Leaf back from becoming a great NFL QB.
However, there appears to be some minor nagging questions in the area of maturity and his mental approach to the game. He is perceived as not always an easy guy to work with, and he tends to beat to his own drummer... As good as he is, he can have some streaks on the field where he looks like he has forgotten everything he has been taught...There seems to be a nagging question here that something might be missing, but it may be hard to verbalize it...However, Leaf made all the right moves at the end of his season when he declared for the NFL draft...Unless he turns some teams off in individual interviews between now and the draft, he should have no problems....Nobody will question his physical abilities, and it is not outlandish to think that he could be the first pick of the draft, instead of Peyton Manning

Marrant de voir que son caractere posait deja probleme en universitaire. Quel destin étrange : etre pris devant Peyton pour ensuite devenir le plus gros bust que la NFL ait connu.

Il lancera pas. Ca va être des handoffs à Barlow et à Gore pendant tout le match. Ou alors, une petite screen sur... Barlow ou Gore.

Mais les fans de Niners ont perdu la raison il y a bien longtemps de cela, quand Joe, puis Steve, puis Jerry ont pris leur retraite.

Regarde Double, il erre sans but, avec aucun projet en tete, ni d'espoir...il attend juste que la journee se termine comme elle avait commencé, de maniere triste et monotone.

The bulky brace on the quarterback's right knee was removed Thursday, another bit of progress in his recovery from strained ligaments. Smith was hurt when his cleats got caught in the turf while trying to avoid Washington's LaVar Arrington during a 52-17 loss on Oct. 23.

With decreased swelling and increased mobility allowing him to resume cardiovascular work, Smith is getting eager to return. He hopes to play in the 49ers' road game against Chicago on Nov. 13, but team doctors are aiming for a home game against Seattle on Nov. 20.
