_________________ In Brock I still trust.

| Exit la défense 3-4! - Citation :
- 49ers plan to unleash their elephant
- Kevin Lynch, Chronicle Staff Writer Monday, October 23, 2006
In the hopes of solving their bear of a defensive problem, the 49ers have come up with an elephant. After giving up a league-worst 194 points in their first six games, the 49ers could well return to practice today from last week's bye with a new look on defense.
It will involve the old elephant, a defense once devised by former defensive coordinator and head coach George Seifert that highlights a pass rusher.
"What we do to a large degree is very much like what you had with (Charles) Haley and (Chris) Doleman, and those kinds of guys with the 49ers," coach Mike Nolan said before escaping Friday for a rare weekend away. "That guy is always the 'rush' guy, but he flip-flops sides. That's really basically what we're doing. They used to play it here."
Haley, Tim Harris, Rickey Jackson and Doleman all played the pachyderm, which puts a pass-rusher out wide, usually in a three-point stance.
While the 49ers don't yet have a player the caliber of the aforementioned group, Brandon Moore, and rookies Manny Lawson and Parys Haralson will try to revive the stampeding pass-rushing role.
It will also mark the annual return to the 4-3 defense, which the 49ers have increasingly played as the season progresses.
For three straight years, the team has gone through preparations to play the 3-4 during training camp. But once the regular season begins, the plan is ditched for the 4-3.
"It puts our best 11 on the field," Nolan said of this year's switch.
The 49ers hoped to go with Bryant Young, Anthony Adams and Marques Douglas as the defensive linemen and Lawson, Jeff Ulbrich, Derek Smith and Moore as the linebackers.
The 3-4 can be taxing for a quarterback, because he never knows where the fourth pass-rusher is going to come from.
However, Lawson proved far better as a linebacker in a two-point stance in coverage and against the run than a pass-rushing threat. Adams, at 6-feet, 300 pounds, has always been miscast as a space-eating nose guard, and Young is far more effective playing in a gap outside the guard than straight up on a guard or tackle.
Also, rookie defensive end Melvin Oliver has solidified his spot as a 4-3 defensive end.
The lineup now features Oliver, Young, defensive tackle Ronald Fields and Douglas on the line and Lawson, Smith and Ulbrich as linebackers.
On passing downs, Moore, Lawson or Haralson will come in as the situational pass rusher.
Haralson injured his foot early in training camp and missed the opener in Arizona. His playing time has steadily increased since then, with his most snaps coming against the Chargers when he got a rare hit for the 49ers on quarterback Philip Rivers.
"He was team captain for two years, I believe, at Tennessee," Nolan said of the 260-pound Haralson. "He's got a lot of power. It's unfortunate that he got hurt in training camp, because I think he'd be a little further (along) than he is right now. But he's starting to show some of the things now that we probably would have seen at the end of training camp."
Coaches might also simplify the scheme and cut down on the constantly shifting personnel groups.
As of late last week, Nolan was still stewing about having linebacker T.J. Slaughter in the game instead of safety Chad Williams when Chargers tight end Antonio Gates beat Slaughter, broke two tackles and scored on a 57-yard pass play.
The first-quarter touchdown last Sunday set the tone for the Chargers' 48-19 win.
Twice this year, the 49ers have been caught with 12 men on defense. They had to call a time out in the second half against the Raiders because they had the wrong defensive group on the field.
It's caused Nolan to ponder the balance between disguising defenses and being too complex.
"We try and create some things that help our players," he said. "It's just like giving your player a tool or a weapon to go into a fight. You want to create a scheme so they won't have bull's-eyes on them. It is something we definitely evaluate."
In the secondary, Mark Roman will continue to get more snaps as the strong safety at the expense of Tony Parrish, and hard-hitting Keith Lewis will likely get more time at free safety in place of the more coverage-oriented Mike Adams.
With Lewis in the game, the secondary is likely to play more zone coverage to hide his coverage deficiencies.
The lineup changes and the return of the elephant are all part of the effort to reach the same goal -- having a much less porous defense for the team's final 10 games.

_________________ In Brock I still trust.

- Opening day offensive line finally back intact
Allen, Jennings to start against Bears; after playing various positions, Snyder back on sidelines
By Matt Maiocco THE PRESS DEMOCRAT
SANTA CLARA – Second-year player Adam Snyder has played well while starting at four spots on the offensive line during his short time with the 49ers.
His reward? He is moving back to the sideline.
Coach Mike Nolan said Monday he expects to start the same offensive line Sunday against the Chicago Bears that began the season. The group has not played together since the sixth play of the season.
That means, left guard Larry Allen will be starting, alongside left tackle Jonas Jennings. Both men are expected back from injuries. It also means right tackle Kwame Harris will retain his starting job over Snyder, Nolan said.
"Adam would swing at the tackle positions," Nolan said. "He'd be the backup at those two positions right now. If they're all healthy, it will look like it did when we opened the season."
Harris, the lone first-round draft pick from the Terry Donahue era still on the roster, is considered the shakiest of the 49ers' starting offensive linemen. Although he has been lauded for playing at the highest level of his NFL career, Harris has still struggled.
"He had a bad day the other day," Nolan said of Harris' problems in a 48-19 loss to the San Diego Chargers. "But we had some other guys that didn't play well in the game, either."
Almost all of Harris' miscues arise in pass-blocking. Quarterback Alex Smith has been sacked 13 times in six games. Harris' pass protection has been partially or entirely to blame for six of those sacks.
Harris has also been called for a team-high six penalties. Nobody on the team has been flagged more than three times. Harris has been called for four holding penalties (one was declined), a false start, and illegal use of hands (also declined).
Last week, Nolan said Snyder would compete for the starting job at both tackle positions, suggesting he could unseat Jennings.
Jennings sat out 13 games last season and has missed all or parts of four games this year with injuries. Nolan is clearly frustrated that Jennings has not been on the field regularly since the club signed him to a seven-year, $36 million contract that included $12 million in guaranteed money.
Jennings was inactive for the Oct. 15 game against the Chargers with a left hand injury sustained early in the previous week's game against the Raiders. He had a wrist sprain, and also underwent surgery Oct. 9 to repair a ligament in his little finger.
Jennings is still wearing a cast on his left hand. He declined comment on Monday.
Snyder appeared to have a good chance to win the starting job at right tackle before a bicep strain forced him to miss most of training camp. He has started five games this season – three at left guard and two at left tackle.
"Adam is a good player and certainly has a right to play," Nolan said.
Snyder started three games in place of Allen, who sustained a left knee sprain on the 49ers' sixth offensive play of the season. Last month, Snyder signed a four-year, $10.5 million contract extension through the 2011 season. _________________ In Brock I still trust.

Ref explains reset of clock, sort of
- Kevin Lynch, John Crumpacker, Chronicle Staff Writers Monday, November 6, 2006
The phrase, "For some reason" might go down with Ben Dreith's "giving them the business" in referee, game-day parlance as an unforgettable utterance.
Referee Ed Hochuli said the aforementioned words when trying to explain why the game clock went back to 25 seconds after expiring before 49ers kicker Joe Nedney nailed a 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Hochuli, noticing that time had run out, threw the flag and called the 49ers for delay of game. Before he voiced his call on regional television, the voice of Nedney cracked through Hochuli's microphone: "The clock reset!" Nedney blared.
Nedney was right. The game clock, which is run by an NFL official, did reset once the time ticked off. It caused Hochuli to reverse his call and forced Nedney to re-kick.
In his explanation, Hochuli said, "The game clock reset for some reason."
Later when asked by a pool reporter, Hochuli provided a fuller explanation.
"The kicker asked me to reset the clock and I said, 'No, we are not responsible for resetting the clock.' The back judge, who is responsible for the play clock, watched it. It got down to two seconds and then it went back up to 25 seconds. The back judge continued to count it the rest of the way down because he knew I had not reset the clock."
Because the clock was reset inadvertently, Hochuli did not call the penalty, which left Vikings coach Brad Childress stewing after the game.
"Feels like home cooking to me," Childress said. Bravo! _________________ In Brock I still trust.

_________________ In Brock I still trust.

| Un peu d'histoire.
Et si, et si... - Citation :
- In the 1979 draft the Dallas Cowboys had the pick just before the 49ers. The Cowboys' draft strategy through that time was to take the highest-ranked player on their draft board at the time of their selection, regardless of position. When the Cowboys' turn came up in the third round, the highest rated player on their board was Montana. However, feeling that the quarterback position was in excellent long-term shape with Roger Staubach and Danny White, and desperately needing a tight end, the Cowboys went off their strategy and drafted Doug Cosbie. The 49ers, and Walsh, took Montana.
_________________ In Brock I still trust.
