Une raison de plus de conserver Pickett :

Citation :
Smith and Pickett have similar qualities. Both have strong arms and both are fleet, particularly Pickett, who might be one of the fastest players on the team. During a minicamp practice in the spring, Pickett bolted from the pocket when rushed by cornerback Ahmed Plummer. Pickett spattered Plummer with grass from his churning cleats.

INSIDE 49ERS TRAINING CAMP
Free agent Simon on team's wish list

Tuesday, August 30, 2005
By MATT MAIOCCO
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers are one of at least seven teams pursuing free-agent defensive tackle Corey Simon, whom the Philadelphia Eagles released Sunday.

The five-year veteran would provide an immediate force in the middle of the 49ers' new 3-4 scheme. Simon was the Eagles' franchise player, but he refused to sign the club's one-year, $5.13 million tender.

Simon, 28, did not report to training camp, and the Eagles released him because of their depth at the position, coach Andy Reid said in a statement.

However, it is questionable whether the 49ers can compete in the Simon sweepstakes. The club is about $3 million under the salary cap, and Simon might want to sign with a team he considers a Super Bowl contender.

The 49ers' top nose tackles include starter Anthony Adams, who might be better-suited to play end in a 3-4 scheme. Second-year player Isaac Sopoaga has the size and strength, but he is untested in the NFL. He missed his rookie season because of a back injury.

Rookie Ronnie Fields is having a slow adjustment to the NFL, but he is expected to earn a spot on the team's 53-man roster. He does not figure to be much of a contributor in his first season.

"A rookie to play defensive line is kind of like a rookie playing offensive line," 49ers coach Mike Nolan said. "It's a tough spot to play. There are a lot of demands."

Nolan comments on Corey Simon, the waiver wire and Woods
Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 07:26:06 PT - Print it
Source: 49erswebzone.com

As reported on Monday, the Trenton Times felt as though the 49ers would be one of many teams interested in former Philadelphia Eagle defensive tackle, Corey Simon's services.

When asked if the team were interested in him, Nolan said, "Yes, but how far it will go, we will have to wait and see. We talked about him, but right now it's not in any negotiations. We talked about it inside. It's not serious right now."

When asked if there was anyone on the wavier wire that the team was interested in, Nolan said, "Lance Frazier, the kid from Dallas, came in for a physical, but he's still a little ways from it. We had him in Baltimore, and I thought he had some skill we can use, but he's injured...In a month or so we can take a look at him again, but he has to get his ankle well...Nothing is going to happen with that anytime soon."

Nolan also said that wide receiver Rashaun Woods would get more playing time against the Chargers tomorrow. Since the team has cut down the number of receivers that they have, Woods should be in there for a good amount of time during the second half.

Citation :
49ers notes: 49ers sign former Falcons lineman

By Matthew Barrows -- Bee Staff Writer
Published 2:15 am PDT Saturday, September 3, 2005

SANTA CLARA - A day before reducing the 49ers' roster, coach Mike Nolan augmented it with the Friday signing of former Atlanta Falcons defensive end Travis Hall.
The 10-year veteran ranks fourth in Falcons history with 41 1/2 sacks, is familiar with the 3-4 defensive scheme San Francisco will use this year and apparently has been playing hard to get with the 49ers since February.

Nolan said Friday that Hall, 33, showed interest in coming to San Francisco after his release from the Falcons but had been holding out for a roster spot on an East Coast team.

"Basically, his kids have been raised in Atlanta," Nolan said. "I think he was hoping something might occur closer to home so he could be near his kids."

Hall's addition became imperative last month when defensive end Chris Cooper was put on injured reserve with a bad shoulder. Nolan, however, said the 49ers would have continued to pursue the 6-foot-5, 295-pound Hall even if Cooper were healthy.

"I think Travis Hall is a proven player," Nolan said. "He's an upgrade for us at this time."

The team released defensive end Scott Scharff to make room for Hall.

Nolan, who plans to cut his roster to 53 players today, said "six or seven" of them will be defensive linemen. Anthony Adams, Bryant Young and Marques Douglas are the starters. The backups appear to be Isaac Sopoaga, Tony Brown, Hall and rookie nose tackle Ronald Fields.

Nolan also said Corey Smith, who recently was converted from defensive end to linebacker, would give the team "a bit of overlay" on the defensive line. Asked if that meant Smith had won a roster spot, Nolan begged off, saying he would decide today.

If Smith ends up making the team, his performance Thursday night in San Diego likely was the tipping point. Smith played his first game at outside linebacker last week against the Tennessee Titans, finishing with four tackles and drawing praise from Nolan.

He looked even better against San Diego. The 250-pounder had two sacks - one that caused a fumble - and also was effective pursuing running backs from the back side.

Citation :
No debate whatsoever: Rice was the best ever

Sep. 5, 2005
By Pete Prisco
CBS SportsLine.com Senior Writer

Smooth. Sleek. Effortless.

Jerry Rice was all that and more.

He's also the greatest football player of all time.

Yes, better than Jim Brown. Better than Lawrence Taylor. Better than Joe Greene.

Better than them all.

Rice retired from the game Monday after 20 seasons of dominating like no other player in NFL history.

That's why he's the best.

At any other position, we can make a case for a handful of players when assessing the best. At quarterback, we have Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Dan Marino, John Elway and others.

No clear-cut winner.

Running back? A case can be made for Brown, Walter Payton, O.J. Simpson, Barry Sanders and even Emmitt Smith.

The same is true at every other position.

Receiver is the only exception.

Rice is hands-down the best to catch passes in the NFL. No other receiver comes close. Not too bad for a guy who was deemed too slow coming out of Mississippi Valley State.

The Rice legend began more than 20 years ago when he was putting up huge numbers catching balls from one Willie Totten at the small school in Mississippi. Playing in Archie Cooley's wide-open system, Rice became a must-see for NFL scouts.

Many came away impressed. Sure, he was doing it against lesser competition, and the numbers were inflated because of the system, but Rice had the goods.

The one concern was he didn't have blazing speed. The clocks said he was a 4.6 40 guy. Forget that -- he played much faster.

Think about it: How often did you see Rice caught from behind in his prime years? Ever?

The San Francisco 49ers were smart enough to realize track speed and football speed are two different things and used the 16th pick on Rice in 1985. It was a good year for receivers, with Al Toon and Eddie Brown going ahead of him. Both were good NFL players, but Rice would prove to be special.

Buoyed by a work ethic instilled from his father, a bricklayer, Rice made himself into the most-feared weapon on any team at any position.

Defensive coordinators held their breath every time he caught a slant pass from Joe Montana or Steve Young. It was easy: Catch, run and score, with that long, gazelle-like stride.

Rice played 16 seasons with the 49ers, a key part of the San Francisco dynasty. Along the way, he broke virtually every career receiving record. He holds the marks for catches, yards receiving and touchdowns. He did it with class, even if he did have the usual receiver complaints about not getting the ball enough. Yes, even Rice pouted at times. He just never made it a public display.

It's doubtful most of his records will be broken.

How often do receivers play 20 years?

Rice has 197 touchdown catches. The Colts' Marvin Harrison has the highest total of any active player with 98 in nine seasons. To pass Rice, he had to average just over 10 touchdowns a season for another 10. Good luck.

Rice has 22,895 receiving yards. Harrison, who has the best chance to reach that, has 11,185. Ten seasons of 1,000 yards or more would get him close. Can that happen? Will he play that long?

Harrison would need 10 70-catch seasons to move past Rice's 1,549.

Greatness comes in all forms. Numbers are one way, and Rice is king there. Seeing it is another. He's tops there, too.

Rice eventually left the 49ers in 2001 and signed with the cross-town Raiders and had three productive seasons, catching 83, 92 and 63 passes. But it was clear then he was starting to slow down. Teams could play him in man coverage and he'd have some problems, whereas in the past they wouldn't even consider it.

He latched on with the Seattle Seahawks last season and caught just 30 passes as a role player. The thinking this spring was that Rice would walk away and retire to a life spent with his family and on the golf course until Canton called.

Instead, he wanted one more chance. So he signed with the Denver Broncos, a move that had all the makings of seeing Joe Namath in a Rams uniform or Johnny Unitas in Chargers colors.

It didn't work. Rice, it seemed, was just hanging on.

At one point this summer, he moved up to the third receiver spot. But it was clear the younger players were the ones who should fill that role. Rice made it through cut day Saturday, but he was not going to figure into the offensive plans this season. He could have stuck around and collected a check -- $900,000 to be exact -- but is that any way for a player of his stature to go out?

Rice did the wise thing. He realized it was time to walk away.

For that, we should be thankful. Nobody wants to see O.J. in 49ers colors all over again, do we?

That's not the way we want to remember Jerry Rice.

We want to picture him catching a slant pass and turning it into an 80-yard touchdown romp, leaving defensive backs behind with the speed that was once questioned by the scouts.

Simpson had the slash.

L.T. had the speed rush.

Marino had the release.

Sanders had the cutback.

Rice has the slant. It's his signature play. Forever.

Leaving now is the right thing to do. The greatest football player of them all does not need to be sitting behind a guy named Darius Watts.

It's nice to know that after all these years, Jerry Rice still won't drop the ball.

At 42, he had a chance to play another season in the NFL, to stick it out as Denver's fourth wideout and, possibly, make a return trip to the playoffs. But he decided against it, realizing life as a backup pass catcher isn't why he plays pro football.

And so he's retiring, making his decision Monday to walk away from a game he dominated for two decades. "It was time," said agent Jim Steiner.

It might have been time a year ago when Rice -- the game's greatest wide receiver -- served as a part-time pass catcher in Oakland and Seattle. But he pressed on, convinced he could help a club and its receivers achieve the success he helped orchestrate for oh-so-many-years in San Francisco.

He couldn't, of course, just as he would struggle to make an impression this summer in Denver. And so Jerry Rice -- a star so magnificent that Denver coach Mike Shanahan once called him the greatest player in league history -- decided to try something he once considered unfathomable.

He would quit.

It was the right decision. It was an overdue decision. But it must have been a difficult decision.

Jerry Rice quit on nothing or nobody in his 20 years of pro football. I recall one miserable afternoon in 1997 when Rice tore his knee ligaments in the season opener against Tampa Bay -- a game the 49ers lost. He would be out for the season, and his string of 193 consecutive games would end.

Only Rice vowed to return. He would, he said, rehabilitate his knee and become the first player to reappear in the same season in which he tore knee ligaments. Critics scoffed, but the club didn't -- refusing to place him on its injured reserve list.

Three months later, Rice returned for a Monday night game against Denver and caught a first-half touchdown pass. Forget that he left with an injury, never to return until the following season. He proved that nobody ... nobody ... should underestimate the strength of his willpower.

That strength carried him where few have gone. Rice excelled at a position where only a handful last beyond their mid-30s, and he did it into his early 40s. I remember one summer listening to Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young talking about what was ahead for him and Rice, and he said he wouldn't be surprised to see Rice playing at 40.

It seemed preposterous at the time. We should have known better.

Rice could've have taken notes in the spring of 2000 when Young, whom the 49ers would encourage to retire, considered going to Denver. He met with Shanahan and was told he was wanted and needed, but he decided against it. He wanted to end his career where he built it, and that was San Francisco.

It would've been appropriate for Rice to follow his quarterback and retire as a 49er, but I remember Bill Walsh once saying that it would be far more difficult for Jerry to say goodbye than Steve. He was right, but so was Rice. He had something left, and he proved it: The Oakland Raiders would not have gone to Super Bowl XXXVII without him.

And now he's gone. Thank goodness Rice left when he knew it was time. Thank goodness he didn't drop the ball.

"His place in history will be as, certainly, the greatest receiver of all time," said Steiner, "but it very possibly will be as the greatest player of all time. He has so much to be proud of, and he went out on his own terms."

Next stop: Canton, Ohio.
