Niners to trade linebacker Winborn to Jacksonville

By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

The San Francisco 49ers on Thursday agreed to a trade that will send former starting linebacker Jamie Winborn, estranged from the team for the past week, to the Jacksonville Jaguars, ESPN.com confirmed.

The deal is contingent upon Winborn, 26, passing a physical examination. The fifth-year veteran arrived in Jacksonville late Thursday night and the physical will be administered on Friday morning. Terms of the trade were not yet available, but it is believed the 49ers will receive a 2006 draft choice.

"It's exciting," Winborn said when reached on his cell phone. "It's a new start for me."

If the trade is completed -- and, while Winborn has suffered injury problems in the past, he is expected to pass the examination -- it will end a strange chapter in the career of the former Vanderbilt star.

Winborn has suffered a series of injuries that slowed his advancement at times. The most serious was a neck injury in 2003. There have also been knee and shoulder injuries. It is likely that the neck injury will receive the most scrutiny from Jacksonville team doctors.

San Francisco first-year head coach Mike Nolan last week told Winborn to clean out his locker and leave the team, and then announced that the 49ers would attempt to trade him. The decision came after Winborn, who started the first two games of the season, was demoted in favor of Andre Carter, a one-time first-round defensive end who was moved to linebacker in Nolan's new 3-4 alignment.

Nolan acknowledged that, while Winborn told him he did not feel he was a backup, there was no verbal confrontation. Neither did Winborn, both Nolan and the player said, ask to be traded. Apparently the decision to deal Winborn was made by Nolan because he felt it would be in the best interest of both parties.

Late last week, Nolan said there were four teams that had indicated interest in a trade but Jacksonville, at least at the time, was not believed to be one of those franchises. One of the teams that pursued a deal is Seattle, and it is believed that New Orleans also showed some interest.

A second-round choice in the 2001 draft, Winborn has appeared in 43 games, mostly as a weakside linebacker in a 4-3 defense. He has 258 tackles, 8½ sacks, three interceptions, four forced fumbles, three recoveries and 16 passes defensed. A versatile defender, he had his best season in 2004, registering 104 tackles and 4½ sacks. In his three games in 2005, Winborn had 13 tackles.

While it is believed that some adjustments were made to his contract to accommodate the trade, Winborn, who was paid by the 49ers even during his absence from the team, will earn the full $1.75 million he is due for this season. Under terms of the contract, Winborn is signed through 2009, at base salaries of $3 million for each of the next four years.

That is only a formality, though, since Winborn has already reached performance levels that allow him to void the final four years of the contract and to become an unrestricted free agent next spring.

Len Pasquarelli is a senior NFL writer for ESPN.com.

... Banged-up secondary

A week ago, cornerback Bruce Thornton was on the 49ers' practice squad. Sunday, he could line up opposite Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Marvin Harrison as the team's starting left cornerback.

Such is the state of the 49ers' battered secondary.

``There's no good time, but there are worse times than others and this is not a good time,'' said Nolan, whose team takes on a dangerous Colts offense that centers on Peyton Manning and Harrison. The Colts' duo is one touchdown pass away from eclipsing Steve Young and Jerry Rice (85) as the most prolific quarterback-wide receiver tandem in NFL history.

``I'm not taking anything away from Peyton Manning and the great players on the Colts team, but all I can do is worry about myself. That's how I try to handle it,'' said Thornton, who played on special teams last week against Arizona after being promoted from the practice squad the day before.

Thornton played in one game for Dallas last October but suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, missing the rest of the year. He was released by the Cowboys shortly before the opener and joined the 49ers practice squad last month.

Rookie Derrick Johnson, who returned a fumble 78 yards for a touchdown while starting in place of injured Ahmed Plummer, suffered a thigh injury in the Arizona game and is not expected to play against the Colts.

Johnson's backup, Willie Middlebrooks, suffered a groin strain and was listed as questionable after missing his second day of practice in a row.

If Middlebrooks can't go, Nolan must decide whether to start Thornton at left cornerback or return free safety Mike Adams to cornerback and have Keith Lewis fill in for him at safety.

Beasley's hurting

Fullback Fred Beasley was unable to practice because of a sore left ankle.

After practice, he left the team's facility to have an MRI exam to try to determine the severity of the injury. Beasley said he has had the ankle problem since last year and aggravated the injury in practice earlier this week.

``It's just been bothering me throughout the weeks and it got to a point where I just kind of aggravated it so I want to get it checked out,'' Beasley said.

• Linebacker Julian Peterson (hamstring) remains questionable after missing his second consecutive day of practice. Brandon Moore and Saleem Rasheed would share time at outside linebacker if Peterson can't play.

• Wide receiver Johnnie Morton could make his second start in a row in place of Arnaz Battle, who has been unable to practice because of continuing knee soreness.

49ers | Winborn Trade Update
Sat, 8 Oct 2005 09:03:11 -0700

Bart Hubbuch, of the Florida Times-Union, reports the San Francisco 49ers received a seventh-round draft pick from the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for LB Jamie Winborn. The 49ers agreed to pay most of Winborn's $1.75 million salary for the 2005 season.

Un 7è tour pour Winborn! On croit rêver.

Evil or Very Mad

"Nolan did not deny Rattay could be dealt before the NFL trade deadline, but he said he is not going to just give away his backup quarterback. At least two teams have called about acquiring Rattay since Nolan announced rookie Alex Smith would take over as the starter.
But, Nolan said, "There've been no serious talks.""

Ulbrich plays through pain

HE MUST DECIDE ON SURGERY THAT COULD END HIS YEAR

By Dennis Georgatos and Daniel Brown
Mercury News

Jeff Ulbrich, one of the 49ers' steadiest defenders, suffered a torn left biceps Sunday and must decide whether to undergo season-ending surgery or keep playing and risk the possibility of permanent damage.

The linebacker's arm snapped back as he tackled Colts running back Edgerrin James during the second quarter. The force of the collision tore the muscle from the bone, Ulbrich said, though he resumed playing and finished with a team-high 10 tackles in a 28-3 loss.

"He's in a lot of pain,'' fellow linebacker Derek Smith said. "But he's going to play with pain and that's just a testament to what kind of guy he is. He's able to go out there and play with an injury and still be competitive.''

Ulbrich said he will meet with team doctors today to discuss his options.

He said he has been told that surgery to reattach the muscle would sideline him for the rest of the season. Doctors also told him that the injury could worsen if he tried to keep playing.

"If I play with it, they might not be able to fix it,'' Ulbrich said.

Ulbrich said he is tempted to keep playing, despite the cautionary words from doctors.

"I really think we're going to do something special here,'' he said. "I don't want to be on the sideline watching it when it happens.''

Niners bump up game plan for stadium development

Phillip Matier, Andrew Ross
Sunday, October 9, 2005

After years of having their proposed mega-stadium-mall languish in developmental limbo, the San Francisco 49ers are contemplating something much bigger -- an entire Niner Town out at the 'Stick, complete with housing, storefronts and even a hotel.

Niners representatives confirmed that they are looking for a "master developer'' with national credentials to help shape the plan and make it happen.

And while nobody is offering much in the way of details, 49ers spokesman Sam Singer gave us a couple of the bold strokes: a stadium and large mall, and mixed-use development that would include residential housing -- both market-rate and affordable units -- as well as apartments.

"All the mayor's and Supervisor Chris Daly's initiatives would be wrapped into the housing plan they are looking at," Singer said.

In other words, a little something for everyone -- including San Francisco's left wing.

Pressure to ease the city's housing crunch is already bringing a wave of development to the once-forsaken part of town -- particularly at Executive Park, at the entrance to Candlestick from Highway 101, where hundreds of units have been built or are on the drawing board.

If the 49ers do pursue their new-neighborhood plan, it would be a significant shift in strategy from the stadium-mall plan hatched under former owner Eddie DeBartolo, for which city voters narrowly approved a $100 million bond in 1997.

That plan has turned out to be a lot more complicated and costly than its backers ever predicted. Questions about the expense of shoring up the flood-prone landfill at Candlestick, the site's proximity to a state park, skepticism about the viability of a mall attached to a stadium that is used only 10 days a year or so -- all have worked against the idea.

Plus, there's the headache of getting in and out of the area, as anyone who has ever attended a game at Candlestick knows.

So after years of studies and false starts -- and under pressure from Mayor Gavin Newsom to get something done before he faces re-election in 2007 -- team owners Denise DeBartolo York and husband John York assembled a new development team of bankers, lawyers and other experts in recent months to reignite the project.

The first sign that something was afoot came last month when the Niners quietly opted not to renew their exclusive development agreement with Mills Corp. -- the team's sole development partner since the stadium-mall bond campaign eight years ago.

Sources following the deal said the Niners and Mills had been at odds over how revenue from the mall portion of the project would be divided. At the same time, however, they didn't rule out Mills coming back into the picture -- and future meetings are planned.

In the meantime, the 49ers are also talking to the likes of Lennar Corp., developer of the old Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, and Forest City Development, builder of the downtown Bloomingdale's.

As for the time line for a new deal getting done? That remains as elusive as ever.

"We share the mayor's sense of urgency and want to get this done as quickly as possible,'' Singer said. "But it's a very complex process."

First start had some positives for Smith
Biggest plus was his role in calling the correct running plays

Tuesday, October 11, 2005
By MATT MAIOCCO
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

SANTA CLARA - It may not be the skill set the 49ers coveted when making him the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, but rookie quarterback Alex Smith showed Sunday he can do a good job of handing off.

Thus, Smith does not look at his NFL starting debut Sunday as a complete waste. The 49ers' top overall pick emerged from his film session Monday feeling as if his overall performance in his starting debut was a little more encouraging than he had originally feared.

"Things didn't go as planned," Smith said. "I learned a lot. It wasn't all bad. I need to take everything from it I can or it would be for nothing.

"There's a long road ahead of me. The bumps in the road now are going to make me a better quarterback down the line."

There were plenty of bumps on Sunday in the 49ers' 28-3 loss to the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts. Smith completed just nine of 23 passing attempts for 74 yards with four interceptions, one lost fumble and five sacks.

When asked what he did best on Sunday, Smith spoke of his role in the run game. Often, the 49ers will call two plays in the huddle and the responsibility falls on the quarterback to choose the more advantageous play at the line of scrimmage. Thanks partly to Smith's decisions after breaking the huddle, Kevan Barlow rushed for a season-high 99 yards on 18 carries.

"That's something I take a lot of pride in, getting us into the right play," Smith said.

Afterward, Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy gave Smith some words of encouragement. Dungy told Smith that he was a Pittsburgh assistant when future Hall of Famer John Elway made his NFL debut against the Steelers.

"He said I looked a lot better than John Elway did in his first start," Smith said.

Smith, 21, has tried to be realistic since becoming the top overall draft pick. Still, he said he expects better results than the awful 8.5 passer rating in his NFL starting debut.

"I know I can play better than that. I don't think it's bad to be frustrated or disappointed because I know it's a good thing. I know I can play here," he said.

Niners coach Mike Nolan, who insisted his team can win the NFC West this season, said he will stick with Smith for the rest of the season. The only thing that can get Smith out of the lineup is injury, he said.

"I'd like to see him improve each week," Nolan said, "but it would be dreaming for me to think he's not going to have a bad day as we go forward."
Youpi! T'as merdé, t'as merdé c'est tout. Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad )

EXTRA POINTS
Linebacker Jeff Ulbrich said he had not decided whether to have season-ending surgery to reattach the biceps muscle in his left arm. If he does not have the surgery, he risks having only 50 percent strength in his arm for the rest of his life, he said. He said his wife is encouraging him to have the surgery. Apparently, his coach thinks he should have the surgery, too.

"He'll be a 49er for a long time," Nolan said. "I know what Jeff wants to do in the worst way, but you have to be smart."

The 49ers claimed rookie safety Jeremy Thornburg (Northern Arizona) off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles. The team waived cornerback B.J. Tucker to make room on the active roster.

Nolan said right tackle Kwame Harris played well Sunday despite getting beaten for at least two sacks. "Kwame's growing all the time," Nolan said. "It's too bad he hasn't been there (right tackle) for three years because he'd be further along. It's sort of like a rookie starting again."

Cornerback Bruce Thornton impressed Nolan with his play on Colts receiver Marvin Harrison. Thornton shadowed Harrison most of the day and allowed just two catches for 17 yards.

"(Harrison) made two and three moves a couple times with Bruce and I'll-be-doggone, Bruce stayed right with him on the moves," Nolan said. "He got him turned around a couple times, but when he sped out of the turn, (Thornton) was right where he needed to be."

A bon entendeur... rambo

"San Francisco coach Mike Nolan initially was reluctant to make the deal, which puts the 49ers’ future even more squarely on the shoulders of Smith, who made five turnovers in his first NFL start on Oct. 9.

But Nolan liked the draft pick, the roster room created by the trade and the chance to exploit the team’s depth at quarterback. Though Nolan refused to disclose the draft pick acquired, he acknowledged it could improve if Rattay reaches certain performance standards."

Evil or Very Mad Mad
What the fuck ?!?

he, nolan, viens voir là [Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 10 Squiiid

Mr. Green
