Offseason notebook: Still armed and dangerous

By Charles Robinson, Yahoo! Sports
June 30, 2005

A year ago, there were so many certain quarterback proclamations. Jacksonville's Byron Leftwich and Houston's David Carr were going to come into their own. Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck was going to take his place among the league's elite offensive players. And of course, San Diego's Drew Brees was walking the plank for the Chargers.

Every offseason, we feel like we have a pretty good read on the league's quarterbacks: who's showing promise, who's fading and who's ready to explode. And every year, the players send our quarterback certainties to the paper shredder. No QB did so with more force than Brees last season. Yet we always manage to cobble together our lists of washouts – guys who we've written off as mostly dead weight.

But with so much uncertainty at the position, someone always manages to surprise us. Whether it's Brees or Jake Delhomme or Rich Gannon, someone we didn't count on has an unexpected flourish. And while there don't seem to be many candidates likely to come out of nowhere to lead a Super Bowl run – or put up astronomical numbers, for that matter – the NFL has a healthy share of quarterbacks who could have a bigger impact than expected.

So in the spirit of the annual NFL resurrection, here are five quarterbacks who enter 2005 in the twilight of their careers or on the verge of being tossed aside by their teams (or both). All of them could end up playing a major role in their team's 2005 fortunes.

Tim Rattay, San Francisco 49ers
Could this be Brees and Philip Rivers all over again? Not exactly. The future of this team belongs to rookie Alex Smith all the way, and the 49ers aren't going to make a shocking playoff run. But Rattay could provide some intrigue before he's dangled as trade bait next offseason. Make no mistake, Smith is far from polished, and that's precisely what will give Rattay his window this season.

Many people forget that we're only a year removed from a time when it looked like Rattay had the makings of a good young quarterback with room to grow. He was coming off a 2003 when he threw seven touchdowns and two interceptions and had won three of his four starts while filling in for Jeff Garcia. Granted, he had better receivers to work with (Terrell Owens, Tai Streets, etc.), but he showed promise. Even last season, when Rattay wasn't struggling with injuries, he had several productive starts, including three straight in October when his quarterback rating ranged from 88.9 to 99.8.

Rattay should end up starting the season as San Francisco's No. 1 quarterback. And he has the talent to succeed when he's not getting pummeled behind an injury-plagued offensive line. If he can keep himself healthy – and that's a pivotal if – he could play well enough to hang on to the top job all season.

[Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 2 Jagstang

Citation :
Offensive makeover

By SFI staff & NFL Scout
Date: Jul 4, 2005

The 49ers were in need of an offensive makeover after ranking outside the NFL's top 13 in total offense last season for the first time since 1978. Owners of the league's 26th-ranked attack in 2004, the 49ers put most of their attention into revamping the offensive line, but also bolstered every other position on that side of the ball with draft picks and - at a few spots - also with veteran newcomers.

The club expects no primary starters from last season's offensive line to return at the same spot this year, as the 49ers hope to make dramatic improvements in their run and pass games. The big free-agent acquisition was left tackle Jonas Jennings, who signed with the 49ers on the first day of free agency.

Jennings' signing allows the 49ers to move 2003 first-round pick Kwame Harris to right tackle, where he takes the spot of Scott Gragg, who was released after a disappointing season. Rookie David Baas, a second-round draft pick, will likely start at right guard, and Justin Smiley - last year's second-round pick - is penciled in as the starter at left guard.

The key to the offensive line is the health of center Jeremy Newberry, who played just one game last season. Newberry underwent offseason knee surgery and his chances of playing this season are roughly 50-50. Eric Heitmann has been working out at center as an insurance policy. Heitmann will be working with the first team there when training camp practices begin July 29.

Most eyes will be on the quarterback situation, as Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, will compete against Tim Rattay and Ken Dorsey for the starting job. Smith, who is still unsigned, should get plenty of chances to win the job outright during the exhibition season.

The 49ers made few significant changes at the other skill positions. Rookie Frank Gore, a third-round selection, is expected to compete with running back Kevan Barlow for some playing time. Barlow was a disappointment in his first season as the featured back.

The only new face expected to get involved in the passing game is Johnnie Morton, who signed a two-year deal as a free agent three weeks after the Chiefs released him in a salary-cap move. Morton, a split end, will try to unseat Brandon Lloyd for a starting job. At worse, Morton should settle into a spot as the team's No. 3 wideout.

Third-year player Arnaz Battle, who has just eight career receptions, moves into the starting lineup at flanker. He takes over for Cedrick Wilson, the team's top wideout last season. Wilson signed with the Steelers as a free agent.

The team also drafted receivers Rasheed Marshall (fifth round) and Marcus Maxwell (seventh round) in addition to seventh-round tight ends Billy Bajema and Patrick Estes, the latter of which the team will try to convert to tackle.

Changing defenses

By SFI staff
Date: Jul 10, 2005

The biggest change on the 49ers' defense this offseason came shortly after coach Mike Nolan was hired. He brought aboard defensive coordinator Billy Davis to implement the 3-4 scheme. The change meant two of the team's top players will be working at new positions in 2005. Defensive end Andre Carter is now an outside linebacker while defensive tackle Bryant Young will be moving to defensive end in his 12th NFL season. And those aren't the only players trading places in the revamped look.

The 49ers were decimated by injuries last season, as nine defensive starters missed a total of 54 games. The defense ranked 24th in the league and allowed a league-high 452 points, one point shy of the franchise record.

The centerpiece of the retooled defense is outside linebacker Julian Peterson, returning from a torn Achilles' tendon. Peterson will be asked to apply more pressure on the quarterback while also using his coverage skills.

"The offense is really on their heels trying to figure out not only who's your fourth rusher, but who your fifth might possibly be," Davis said of the 3-4 scheme.

Personnel-wise, the 49ers did not make many changes. Nolan endorsed the signing of defensive lineman Marques Douglas, who played a key role under Nolan with the Ravens. Douglas is the only player on the 49ers' line that has significant NFL experience in a 3-4 scheme. He can play end in the base defense and move inside on nickel downs.

One of the big changes on defense is in the secondary, where cornerback Mike Rumph has agreed to switch to free safety. Rumph, who missed 14 games last season due to a broken right forearm, made the position change during the 49ers' organized team activities in June.

The 49ers' coaches have liked what they've seen from cornerbacks Ahmed Plummer and Shawntae Spencer, giving them the freedom to move Rumph to safety. Rumph is expected to take the place of Ronnie Heard, who struggled at free safety last season and was not re-signed as a free agent.

One of the big priorities for the 49ers is finding a player who can play nose tackle in their base defense. Anthony Adams is currently No. 1 on the depth chart, but he will undoubtedly receive stiff competition from Isaac Sopoaga, who spent his entire rookie season in injured reserve, and rookie Ronnie Fields, a fifth-round draft pick from Mississippi State.

Sixth- and seventh-round draft picks Derrick Johnson and Daven Holly will compete against second-year player Rayshun Reed for the all-important role as the team's third cornerback.

The key to the new system – and any 3-4 system – is the play of the linebackers, which was San Francisco’s strength last year and figures to be again this season. Peterson, Derek Smith, Jeff Ulbrich and Jamie Winborn are all productive players who could excel in the new scheme while all being on the field at the same time.

But the Niners also have talented depth at the position beyond those four projected starters, including Carter, who could return to his pass-rushing prowess of 2002 (when he had 12.5 sacks) in his new role on the edge.

Carter, who’s considered too small to play end in the new defense, is one player who was thought to be on the outside looking in with the team's switch to the 3-4.

But Nolan said he definitely sees Carter with a role in the new scheme. Carter has the flexibility to play outside linebacker with his hand on the ground or in a two-point stance. However, it's not quite clear exactly what Carter's role will be. He is likely to complete against Winborn for a starting role on the right side, though Nolan has said both players can be on the field at the same time.

Winborn started 10 games last season after Peterson was injured. He ranked third on the team, behind Smith and Ulbrich, with 104 tackles. He was second behind John Engelberger (six) with 4.5 sacks.
Citation :
PARRISH HAS PLAYED SEVEN seasons in the NFL, and he will be playing under his fifth head coach. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Chicago Bears.

"I'm definitely confident," he said. "I've seen some turnover and I like what's going on here. I think the structure itself is what I like best. The (new) coaching staff has done a great job of laying the foundation and letting players know what's expected of them and giving everyone a direction. (Defensive coordinator) Billy Davis has done a good job of teaching. I think we're ahead of where we were as far as learning the system."

Parrish said he does not see much of a difference between his role in the past, while the 49ers played a 4-3 defense, to now with the team making the transition to a 3-4. Since Week 11 of the 2001 season, Parrish is tied with Ravens' safety Ed Reed with a league-high 21 interceptions.

"I believe my role is the same as it's been since been here," he said. "The bottom line is, 'Go get the ball.'"

ALTHOUGH THE 49ERS SOLD out every game since a 1981 regular-season game against the Cowboys, they are starting to see that their support is dwindling.

Last week, the 49ers announced a $2 million marketing campaign that emphasizes the team's tradition while also encouraging fans to show faith for the future.

"We are proud of our faithful and loyal fans and this campaign will help us celebrate their long-standing support of the 49ers," said David Pearl, the team's vice president of sales and marketing. "Brand campaigns are at the center of every successful business: sports and entertainment companies are no different. We are going to be aggressive in promoting who we are."

The 49ers plan to unleash a barrage of radio commercials and newspaper advertisements as the team gets set to open training camp later this month. The club is also looking to build support for a new stadium, which will likely require season-ticket holders to pay some sort of seat license as well as increased ticket prices.

THE 49ERS ARE SET to report to training camp later this month, so Nolan gave his coaching staff some time off before the grind begins. Most of the players have also been staying away from the team's practice facility in Santa Clara, Calif.

THE 49ERS REMAIN CONFIDENT that they will have No. 1 overall selection Alex Smith signed for the opening of training camp on July 28. Of course, the 49ers would love for Smith to assert himself as the team's top quarterback during the exhibition season, and that is only going to happen if Smith reports to camp on time.

The 49ers have already signed three of their 11 draft picks, but Smith is the biggie. Most of the team's nearly $6.2 rookie salary pool will be devoted to Smith's contract. He will receive the largest amount of guaranteed money - expected to be more than $20 million - the organization has ever awarded.

NINERS’ VICE PRESIDENT OF player personnel Scot McCloughan was scheduled to attend the workout July 8 for USC defensive tackle Manuel Wright, who is the top prospect entered in the July 14 supplemental draft. Nolan said last month that the 49ers did not plan to select anyone in the supplemental draft, but that he and McCloughan would continue to discuss the possibility leading up to the draft.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Guys are excited. They definitely acknowledge and like the effort Dr. York has put into trying to restructure and reestablish the organization" - Safety Tony Parrish on the optimism surrounding the offseason moves enacted by the club's owner.

Very Happy

What the fuck ?!?

Deal expected to be finalized Thursday

The Denver Broncos called defensive end John Engelberger and his agent, Robert Lattinville, to inform him they are trying to finalize a trade in which Engelberger goes to the Broncos and the San Francisco 49ers receive cornerback Willie Middlebrooks...

Winborn hungry to feast in 3-4 scheme

By Craig Massei, SFI editor
Date: Jul 17, 2005

The 3-4 defensive scheme the 49ers will unveil this season means different things for different San Francisco players, but for Jamie Winborn it means liberation. The flashy fifth-year linebacker envisions himself being unleashed in the new system that will see Winborn beginning a season as a full-time starter for the first time in his career. “Everybody can feed in this defense,” Winborn told SFI. And what will he be feasting on this fall? “I’ll be eating anything that comes my way,” he said.

  • QB
Tim Rattay / Alex Smith / Ken Dorsey
  • RB
    Kevan Barlow / Frank Gore
  • WR
Brandon Lloyd / Johnnie Morton / Arnaz Battle, etc...
  • Nose Tackle
    Isaac Sopoaga / Anthony Adams
    Winborn -- Ulbrich -- D Smith -- J Peterson
  • DB
Ahmed Plummer / Spencer Shawntae / Middlebrooks Willie

(July 25, 2005) -- Alex Smith and the San Francisco 49ers have agreed to a six-year, $51 million contract. He will be introduced at a press conference early on July 26.

Smith will receive $24 million in guaranteed money -- a 20 percent increase over what Eli Manning, the top overall choice in the 2004 NFL Draft, got.

Early today, one NFL general manager said Monday he was told a Smith deal would occur tonight or the next morning. Heading into the weekend, before Smith's agent Tom Condon flew to the Bay Area, the two sides were 80 percent done with the deal.

Now they 49ers have the foundation of their franchise signed for the future.

It must be nice to be 21 and have $24 million in your pocket, huh

Citation :
... Also, each of the 49ers' other 10 draft picks have either signed, agreed to terms or are close to finalizing contracts. Third-round picks Frank Gore, a running back, and offensive lineman Adam Snyder have agreed to deals, while guard David Baas, a second-round pick, appears close...

Exact.

Citation :
New beginnings

By Craig Massei, SFI editor
Date: Jul 30, 2005

When you’re coming off a 2-14 season, you don’t exactly ease into training camp the next year. And there the 49ers were Saturday afternoon, during the first summer practice of the Mike Nolan era, wearing full pads and not hesitating to use them. The feisty first day set a tone of energy and aggression, and here’s a collection of other observations, speculations and viewpoints from the new beginnings of the team’s camp opener.

The difference in this camp could be seen – and heard – right away. The pads were popping, perhaps even a little too much to Nolan’s liking. There were some crunching hits in team drills and several players were left sprawling on the ground, not the kind of thing you expect to see on the first day of camp in drills that ostensibly were of the hit-and-release variety.

“We still have to learn to practice with one another,” Nolan said. “Obviously, we’re not doing a lot of live drills, as far as going to the ground and tackling. But there were a few too many bodies on the ground at different times. That’s to be expected. But it’s important that we learn how to practice with one another, because part of the thing I take pride in is taking care of these guys. We kind of want to do a better job of that.”

  • One day into camp, predictably, the 3-4 defense is ahead of the new-version West Coast offense.

  • The first thing you notice about Alex Smith is how big and strong he looks in pads. It didn’t hurt to see him hurling radar spirals deep downfield into the waiting fingertips of his receivers, either.

  • If Adam Snyder has to play guard for a while, so be it. The rookie stepped in for David Baas with the first team offense Saturday without a glitch.

  • But here’s what the 49ers have going on behind Snyder: Scott Peters and Tony Wragge, among other unheralded names, and that’s a little scary.

  • Regardless of how the competition plays out for the starting role, Kevan Barlow and Frank Gore are going to be a fine complement to each other at tailback.

  • But here’s how that competition started out Saturday: Barlow heading to the locker room early with what Nolan called "heat frustration,” and Gore weaving swiftly, smoothly and smartly through even the tiniest holes as the fans lining the main field roared every time he broke away.

  • When Gore’s not slipping through holes, he’s bursting through them.

  • Steve Bush might not be able to unseat Pro Bowler Fred Beasley at fullback, but he could see a lot of time on the field as a multi-use H-back.

  • Beasley versus linebacker Derek Smith during individual blitz drills: Now, that was contact! These two guys went at it like two battering rams slamming into each other to a virtual standoff.

  • Brandon Lloyd has worked on his technique of slipping away from cornerbacks at the line of scrimmage – a weakness for the starting split end last year – and the results already are showing.

  • Rayshun Reed clearly is in the mix at cornerback, where he’s going to have a chance to carve a niche for himself in secondary coverage packages.

  • No need to worry about the Julian Peterson comeback. In his first unrestricted practice since tearing his left Achilles tendon last October, the two-time Pro Bowler was cagey and quick and looking every bit at home at his old left outside linebacker position in the team’s new 3-4 scheme that appears to accentuate his skills perfectly.

  • Andre Carter’s adjustment period from 4-3 defensive end to 3-4 outside linebacker is continuing in pads. But it looks like he’ll be a tough blocking assignment for running backs when he comes flying in from the edge.

  • Ken Dorsey made a lot of progress this spring, but he still tends to uncork the occasional wobbler when he attempts to throw long. That’s not going to go over so well this year with the heightened competition at quarterback and the team intent on moving along at the position.

  • The same old B.Y.: Bryant Young is picking up where he left off last year as he continues to turn back the clock to the heyday of his NFL youth.

  • The 49ers released offensive tackle Khiawatha Downey before Saturday’s practice, making him the first casualty of training camp. He wasn’t going to get much of an opportunity to help this team, anyway.

  • You won’t find burly Chris Cooper making any complaints about the team’s switch to the 3-4. Playing end in that scheme is suiting him well.

  • Linebacker Richard Seigler is ready to make some noise after a quiet rookie season.

  • The enigma of Rashaun Woods continues. One minute he’s looking slick and shifty with some nice open-field moves to elude cornerbacks. The next minute he’s dropping long spirals placed right on his hands.

  • Andrew Williams doesn’t seem to be able to get to the quarterback any better as an outside linebacker than he did as a defensive end.

  • Marcus Maxwell has some size. And some speed. And he knows how to use both to go up in the air and get the football.

  • Johnnie Morton is a bit slight of build below the torso, but he has a way of slipping into cracks of a defense on passing downs.

  • Hopefully, this is not an omen: Arnaz Battle and Rasheed Marshall both fumbled away their first opportunities of training camp to field punts. And then, Marshall did it again.

  • Willie Middlebrooks might want to show a little bit more urgency with his new team because, despite what the 49ers relinquished to get him, he doesn’t have a job secured in the secondary.

For that matter, not many players do on this team. But that will start changing as the 49ers keep moving forward with each summer practice.

Pourvu que ça dure...

D'autres échos, toujours provenant de SFIllustrated...

Citation :
--- Things got a little frisky near the finish of practice-ending team drills after quarterback Ken Dorsey took a mild hit from defensive end Corey Smith to which offensive tackle Jonas Jennings took exception. Several non-pleasantries were exchanged and the two players had to be separated, at which point coach Mike Nolan called the entire team into a brief huddle before resuming the final series of the session.

--- After the impromptu team convergence, Nolan sent second- and third-team reserves onto the field to finish practice with one final drive down the field. Live. As in, no-holds-barred full contact, the first time Nolan has allowed his troops to go at each other without restriction since camp began. And those mostly unproven players hungry for roster spots did not hold back.

--- “The live that you saw at the end was thrown in there at the last,” Nolan explained. “It looked like we needed to do it. Everybody wanted to fight, so we thought we’d let them punch it out a little bit. They did a very good job and that’s what we’ll do; they want to fight it out, we’ll fight it out. That was a good thing. That shows that guys are competing.”

--- Rookie cornerback Daven Holly, who has been making a solid early impression with his athletic skills, used the opportunity to deliver several licks before practice finally ended with undrafted rookie receiver Fred Amey diving for the left end zone pylon on a flanker reverse. Two plays earlier, Amey had hauled in a long pass before being crunched by both Holly and safety Mike Adams. “It was a good chance to get out some aggression,” Holly said.

--- There was a Kwame Harris sighting Sunday during mid-practice team drills as the offensive tackle blew out the right side of the defensive line with a pancake block that took out both end Chris Cooper and linebacker Saleem Rasheed, allowing tailback Maurice Hicks to scoot for a big gain.

--- Hicks would seem to be the odd man out now in a cramped competition at tailback that includes Kevan Barlow, Frank Gore and Terry Jackson. But the slashing speedster won’t go down without a fight, and coaches have noticed his diligence and determination, giving Hicks first-team snaps Sunday. He’s also getting a long look as a kickoff returner.

--- Fourth-year linebacker Brandon Moore completely lit up Barlow on blitz, blasting into him – and almost running over him – with one of the loudest and best hits of the day. Moore already has done that a few times in camp, and he is going to make this team and earn himself a role on it.

--- Rookie receiver Marcus Maxwell continues to make an impression, adding some start-stop ability after the catch to go along with his formidable physical tools. --- Two days into camp, there isn’t a 49ers defensive back that can cover veteran receiver Johnnie Morton, and it’s not even close.

--- Catch of the day: P.J. Fleck’s all-out, over-the-shoulder diving grab of a long bomb thrown by rookie quarterback Alex Smith, who put just enough air under the pass to allow Fleck to extend underneath it.

--- You can see it all coming together for Smith each day as the offense clicks in his head while he’s executing it. In one effortless motion, Smith dropped back to pass, looked left for the quick slant, checked over the middle at his secondary target, then dropped the ball off to a wide-open running back in the flat.

--- Smith again showed nice touch on his deep passes most of the day, but he began the final session of team drills by tossing up two fluttering, underthrown balls on deep sideline routes, then had his next pass knocked back in his face by oncoming linebacker Derek Smith.

--- Tight end Eric Johnson is really going to help Smith’s development – and that of the offense – by being a dependable safety valve over the middle when receivers are covered and pass protection breaks down.

--- Arnaz Battle completely lost safety Tony Parrish on an out-and-up pattern – then dropped a perfectly-placed pass from Tim Rattay. Battle has displayed a few cases of the dropsies so far, and he needs to get more consistent if the Niners are to count on him at the crucial flanker position.

--- Safety Keith Lewis is showing some instinct and athleticism to go with his aggressive style, chasing Dorsey to the sideline on a pass play, then knocking away his throw when the QB tried to get rid of the ball.

--- Joe Nedney’s big leg is going to provide a significant upgrade over Todd Peterson on kickoffs. This guy doesn’t have much trouble reaching the end zone.

--- The 49ers have a lot of areas that require attention, but they really need to address who their kick returners are going to be, because the guys being tried in those roles so far aren’t getting the job done.

--- Shawntae Spencer backpedals smoothly, stays square, then explodes out of his break on the ball. He’s quickly establishing himself as the team’s most fluid corner, and Niners coaches and personnel evaluators are impressed.

--- On the other side, Ahmed Plummer is appearing stiff and sore and is a few poor practices away from being a legitimate cause for concern.

--- Rookie Adam Snyder is going to be a good offensive lineman, but Bryant Young completely tossed him aside in one-on-one drills, like Young has been doing to a lot of offensive lineman since camp began. “There’s a real strong chance B.Y. is going to be with us (this season),” Nolan quipped.

--- And now, after an introductory weekend, two-a-day practices begin Monday morning.

--- “I’m looking forward to that,” Nolan said.

Second-year receiver Rashaun Woods, fighting to climb up from the lower rungs of the depth chart at 49ers training camp, suffered a setback during Monday's morning practice session when he injured his groin. The extent of the injury won't be known until the team sees how Woods feels Tuesday, but the Niners' 2004 first-round draft pick did not return for Monday's afternoon practice. Woods missed most of training camp last year during his rookie season, but Niners coach Mike Nolan said that factor does not add to his concern about Woods this year. "If anybody gets injured, I get concerned about it because it’s going to set them back," Nolan said. "Adversity is part of it, and we're certainly not going to use that as an excuse. Everybody’s got to get well and get on the field. We've got to move on. That's just the way it is. (Woods) needs to get healthy right now with the groin."
