- Chiefs and Gonzalez agree in Principle to a Five-Year Contract Extension

Croyle is a principal figure as the Chiefs begin to consider their future at quarterback, both in the short and long terms. One veteran, starter Trent Green, played poorly this season. The other, Damon Huard, is scheduled to be a free agent. There won’t be room for both Green and Huard on the 2007 Chiefs. No matter what the Chiefs decide, Croyle looms as either a starter or, more likely, the top backup who would get a quick promotion if the regular falters.
Edwards this week wouldn’t be dragged into a discussion about the Chiefs’ quarterback situation. But he is clearly enamored by Croyle, who he compares with Chad Pennington, his former quarterback with the Jets.
Croyle, picked by the Chiefs in the third round from Alabama, was one of 11 quarterbacks drafted last year.
The Chiefs believe Croyle, an accurate passer with a strong arm, can be that kind of player as soon as next season.
Croyle missed much of training camp and the preseason because of a shoulder injury. He played in only one game, the final minutes of the blowout loss in Pittsburgh, and looked overmatched.
Two of Croyle’s seven passes were intercepted and one was returned for a touchdown. If Croyle was indeed overmatched, the Chiefs are counting on that to change quickly.
Durability is a major question for Croyle. He is small (listed by the Chiefs at 6 feet 2 and 206 pounds). He missed his senior season of high school and most of his junior year at Alabama because of knee injuries.

Will see | |

- Turner appears to be leading race for Dallas job
By Adam Schefter NFL Analyst MIAMI (Jan. 27, 2007) -- As they try to find the Dallas Cowboys' next head coach, Jerry Jones and his sons are saying little.
Others are being left to speak for them. Norv Turner has been a disappointment as a head coach, but Dallas might still give him the job. What is being said around the league is that it appears as if it is Norv Turner's job to lose. Turner is scheduled to meet with the Joneses in Dallas on Jan. 28. Saints defensive coordinator and former Cowboys assistant Gary Gibbs spent today huddling with the Joneses.
And sooner rather than later, as Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said after his interview with the Cowboys in Dallas on Jan. 26, the Joneses would like to wrap up their search. The answer could come as soon as Jan. 28.
Some expect it to be Turner, who would love to return to Dallas, even with San Francisco doing everything within its power to sweeten his contract and make it difficult for him to leave the 49ers.
Turner will not oppose the idea of keeping the Cowboys' head-coaching job warm for Jason Garrett, whom the Cowboys hired last week as their offensive coordinator/possible head coach/potential head coach in training. Turner wants to coach only another few years and landing in Dallas now could be the perfect curtain call to cap his career.
But also know this: Former Dallas quarterback Troy Aikman has had a significant influence on the Cowboys' coaching process. It is hardly accidental that two of the men Jones has gravitated to are Turner, who gave Aikman's Hall-of-Fame induction speech, and Garrett, whom Aikman cited during his Hall-of-Fame acceptance speech as his greatest professional confidant.
Aikman clearly endorsed each candidate to Jones, and the Cowboys owner was familiar enough with each man to include them in the process.
Now at least one, and quite possibly both, will be responsible for leading the Cowboys into 2007 and their new stadium in 2009.
