Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

Citation :
Tim Rattay's trade to Tampa Bay was the first good news for 49ers fans since they beat St. Louis in the season opener -- but the good news, really, is not so much about Rattay.

It is about Mike Nolan, the 49ers' first-year coach.

The trade means that Nolan finally has come to his senses.

Enough nonsense from the coach about winning the NFC West, about how much progress the 49ers are making. Enough from the players about how they're coming together and how, said linebacker Derek Smith, they "see signs of a special defense ... just a little bit off."

Let's be brief and blunt:

The 49ers stink. Six weeks into the season, they rank next-to-last in the NFL in offense and last in defense and, with the exception of more enthusiasm among the players under a better coaching staff, they look just as bad as they did a year ago.

There is every indication the 49ers will go to the wire battling the Houston Texans for the first pick in the 2006 draft. It's almost as hard to lose every game in the NFL as it is to win every game, but, nonetheless, there is not a game between now and New Year's Day the 49ers are reasonably expected to win.

Nolan, thus far, has not publicly acknowledged what a sad-sack operation he inherited and he has been unwilling to level with the fans about how far the 49ers really are from becoming a factor in the NFL. He also has not done enough to push ownership into strengthening the front office with experienced football men, which would help him do his job.

The 49ers' organization, such as it is, needs to be completely torn down before it can be rebuilt, and getting rid of Rattay is an important part of the teardown. He is too much a reminder of the failures of the recent past. He never could have served as the savvy veteran adviser Alex Smith requires and doesn't have, because Rattay didn't understand his role. Rattay made that obvious when he said he was "upset" about being pulled for Smith in the debacle against the Cardinals, one of three games in the last four in which the 49ers' offense failed to score.

So, by trading Rattay, leaving Smith without even a second-rate veteran quarterback to help him, Nolan is acknowledging in deed, if not in words, what everyone else already knew, that any hope for the 49ers lies in the future, not in the present.

Like most backups, Rattay could look good at times, but then he'd break your heart with mistakes. He is the son of a coach and he played in a sophisticated passing offense in college, yet he repeatedly made the same dumb mistakes in the fourth quarter of NFL games. This is Rattay's sixth NFL season; in his last significant fourth quarter, he threw two interceptions at home against Dallas.

With the Bucs, Rattay can compete with Luke McCown to be a backup quarterback now that Chris Simms will start in place of Brian Griese, who apparently is out for the season with a knee injury.

Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden has his team off to a surprising 5-1 start and wanted another veteran on the roster. McCown has only four NFL starts on his resume, and Gruden can't stand Simms, even though he'd never say so publicly.

Simms is a left-hander, and Gruden -- even though he worked a year with the 49ers when they had a quarterback named Steve Young on the roster -- does not like left-handed quarterbacks.

Further, just as Rattay was one of the last vestiges of Terry Donahue's failed regime, Simms is a reminder in Tampa of the Rich McKay/Tim Ruskell administration that was in place the first year Gruden coached the Bucs (and won the Super Bowl). Gruden, who hadn't even worked out Simms, chafed when McKay drafted him.

Tampa Bay's surprising success this season has been because of its defense, which is allowing the fewest yards per game in the league, and a running game led by rookie Cadillac Williams. With 831 rushing yards in six games, the Bucs are on pace to finish the season with 2,216, which would be their highest total since 1979. So even if Rattay somehow should be forced to play, he would not be asked to do too much.

As for the 49ers, they need to get more of their young players on the field, not only Smith. Nolan made a comment recently about how the kids needed to play, but his actions don't square with his words. One player who comes to mind is third-round draft choice Adam Snyder, who played left tackle at Oregon, where he was the Pac-10's lineman of the year.

In the 49ers' situation, Snyder should be playing tackle, not someone such as Anthony Clement, a free agent the 49ers picked up off the street. The last time the 49ers hit bottom, they plugged four rookies into the starting lineup in 2000 and, a year later, they were 12-4 and in the playoffs. There is no sign they are headed in that direction this time.

Citation :
Texans, 49ers bound for Bush Bowl on Jan. 1

(October 18, 2005) — The Houston Texans and the San Francisco 49ers meet on New Year's Day in what might become the Bush Bowl.

Last season, USC sophomore running back Reggie Bush's legs helped quarterback teammate Matt Leinart win the Heisman Trophy.

Last Saturday, in one of the greatest games in college football history — USC 34, Notre Dame 31 — Bush clearly was the most dynamic and valuable player on a field loaded with classy athletes on both teams. He averaged 10.2 yards on 26 touches and scored three TDs.

All due respect to Leinart and the other top-shelf college players this fall, but if Bush stays healthy and the Trojans three-peat as national champions, he should be a lock for the Heisman and every other possible honor. As a former Heisman winner, Leinart has a vote this year and says he has penciled in Bush.

With his moves, speed and instant acceleration, Bush reminds me of a cross between Gale Sayers, O.J. Simpson and Barry Sanders. That's lofty company and a strong clue that he'll be a superstar in the NFL.

Bush is a junior, and if he opts for the 2006 NFL college draft (I can't think of one logical reason why he shouldn't), he'll be a top-three pick and maybe No. 1.

It will be interesting if Bush enters the 2006 NFL draft and Houston or San Francisco has the No. 1 pick.

The final week of the 2005 NFL regular season will include Houston at San Francisco in a matchup of what appear to be the league's two worst teams.

The Texans already have their franchise QB (David Carr) and RB (Domanick Davis) and probably would trade the No. 1 pick for a package of players and draft picks from a team lusting for a QB (Leinart) or an instant star RB with gate appeal (Bush). The 49ers selected QB Alex Smith No. 1 in the 2005 draft and probably would take Bush No. 1 in 2006.

2/ Reggie Bush

49ers show up, get everything else wrong

HARD TO FIND POSITIVES AFTER THUMPING BY REDSKINS

By Dennis Georgatos
Mercury News

LANDOVER, Md. - Shawntae Spencer thought he was going to have safety help deep. The 49ers cornerback thought wrong.

The misunderstanding was at the center of a blown coverage resulting in a touchdown, one in a series of gaffes by the 49ers in their latest loss, 52-17 to the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

There were plenty of others on both sides of the ball, including another rough outing for Alex Smith, who was sacked five times, threw an interception and fumbled three times, losing one.

``The only positive thing that I can think about,'' said Coach Mike Nolan, reaching for signs of progress, ``it doesn't really have much to do with us. But the Astros were 15-30 at the beginning of May, and they seemed to make it where they are today. So I guess that is the best thing we can hope for.''

The 49ers already were trailing 21-7 when Santana Moss slipped behind Spencer. Spencer had expected help and broke off his coverage, letting an unguarded Moss gather in Mark Brunell's 32-yard touchdown pass while looking at free safety Mike Adams as if to ask, ``Where were you?''

Nolan said the Redskins were in a formation that called for Adams to stay in coverage in the middle of the field. While Adams was in the right spot, he took the blame for the foul-up, saying he should have done a better job of communicating with Spencer.

``It's my job to tell him. That's on me,'' Adams said. ``I'll get yelled at in the meeting.''

The failure to communicate was one of the more glaring errors by the 49ers, whose parade of mistakes began on the first play, when Smith was sacked and fumbled.

Brunell drove the Redskins 61 yards, finishing the drive with a 2-yard touchdown pass to wide-open H-back Mike Sellers.

By halftime, the 49ers were well on their way to their fifth consecutive loss, trailing 35-7.

(...)

The Redskins, who scored at least 50 points for the first time in six years, had seven plays of 20 yards or more. They took advantage of the 49ers' tendency to overpursue for several of those big gains with screens and misdirection plays.

``Those little screens, those throwbacks . . . we have to be more disciplined than that,'' Nolan said. ``We need to stay with our guy. That was disappointing. We have some new guys out there -- so be it. Everyone has new guys.''

The newness extends to the offense, where Smith was 8 of 16 for 92 yards in his second career start and his first since quarterback Tim Rattay was traded to Tampa Bay, the 49ers' opponent next Sunday.

Both of Smith's turnovers led to touchdowns by Redskins, who brought a blitzing, attacking style that was in contrast to the more conventional defense Smith faced against the Indianapolis Colts last week.

``We went from a defense that didn't throw a lot at you to a defense this week that has a lot of movement, a lot of disguise, bringing a lot of different pressures,'' Smith said. ``I need to expect that. We need to learn to beat it.''

But the NFL's No. 1 pick is enduring tough lessons. He has committed seven turnovers in two starts, but he did lead a first-quarter scoring drive that ended a two-game streak by the 49ers without an offensive touchdown. Frank Gore also broke a 72-yard touchdown run with two minutes left, and Joe Nedney kicked a field goal.

``I think we know where we can go, that's the exciting thing,'' Smith said. ``We are close, but I'm getting tired of saying we are close.''

Fullback Fred Beasley, in his eighth year with the 49ers, said the loss was one of the worst he has experienced. But he also said the 49ers have to turn their focus toward the next game.

``You never want to be in a game like this, but it did happen,'' he said. ``This is way down. It's like we're six feet deep and they're throwing dirt over us right now. But we aren't going to let that happen, because we still have games to play.''

Citation :
We have no idea how good Alex Smith will eventually be as an NFL quarterback, but give him this much: The kid has amazing vision.
Because after perhaps the worst loss in 49ers history -- a 52-17 humiliation by the Washington Redskins -- Smith swore he could see some hope and progress.
"There are glimpses,'' Smith said. "You can see it. I can see it.''

Niners QB Smith limping on sprained knee

By GREG BEACHAM, AP Sports Writer
October 24, 2005

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Alex Smith sprained his right knee in San Francisco's fifth straight loss, and the 49ers aren't certain their rookie franchise quarterback will play against Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Smith, 8-of-16 for 92 yards and one interception in the Niners' humiliating 52-17 defeat, was hurt when his cleats got caught in the turf while LaVar Arrington tackled him in the first quarter.

He played the rest of the game, feeling only momentary pain -- but after his knee stiffened up overnight, the No. 1 overall draft pick wore a heavy wrap and a brace Monday at the 49ers' training complex. He is listed as probable on the injury report, but the 49ers will wait until later in the week to determine whether Smith can make his third career start.

Smith sprained two ligaments on the inside of his knee, and fluid built up behind his kneecap. Though he had previous back injuries from weightlifting, he had never been hurt while playing football in high school or at Utah.

``I guess that's why I do things like that,'' Smith said, referring to his dangerous attempt to make a play while Arrington was bearing down on him. ``Other people would have gone out of bounds or gone down. Obviously, I need to learn from that.''

Last week, the 49ers traded Tim Rattay, Smith's veteran backup, to the Buccaneers for a low-round conditional draft pick. The move was meant to cement their faith in Smith while adding a ninth draft choice for next spring -- but it left Ken Dorsey and Cody Pickett as the only backups for a 21-year-old rookie whose head is still swimming at the speed of the NFL game.

Smith underwent an MRI exam Monday, and he'll have therapy and rehabilitation before practice on Wednesday.

``We've just got to see how much I can tolerate,'' he said.

The season has been equally rough for Smith and his teammates. The 49ers have fallen to 1-5 with dismal efforts on offense, defense and special teams -- but Smith's numbers are just as bad as you might expect from a rookie quarterback on a rebuilding team that had the NFL's worst record last season.

After two starts and two relief appearances in place of Rattay, Smith is 23-of-50 for 200 yards. He has thrown five interceptions and is still waiting for his first touchdown pass, leading to a quarterback rating of 17.5.

Smith also has been sacked 12 times, including five by the Redskins. Yet coach Mike Nolan believes Smith improved in the 49ers' loss at Washington, specifically citing his decreased turnovers after making five against Indianapolis earlier in the month. Smith fumbled three times against the Redskins, but lost only one.

``He did drop the ball, but in comparison, I thought that he played better,'' Nolan said. ``How much better? That's a good question. I know that the game did slow down for him a little bit, which is good. In two or three years, that is a good thing for a quarterback.''

But the 49ers' fate for this season will be determined in the next few weeks. If the defense can't fix the glaring problems that allowed Washington to score 52 points, Smith's struggles or successes won't mean much to the 49ers' record.

Yet Nolan remained pleased with his players' positive attitude despite the stark statistical deficits and demoralizing losses faced every week. The coach even cited previous turnarounds he experienced as an assistant: the Giants' rally from a 3-7 start to a 9-7 finish in 1994, or the Redskins' rebound from an 0-7 start to a 7-9 finish in 1998.

``I believe it smells good in the building,'' Nolan said. ``Our players would tell you the same thing, and that's important. It doesn't change or rectify the things that happened in the ballgame, in the way we performed. I believe it's difficult right now for everyone in what we're going through, but I do also believe that in the end, it will make us stronger.''

Notes

The 49ers will present former quarterback Steve Young with his Hall of Fame ring during their game against Seattle on Nov. 20. Young was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August. His No. 8 will be retired by the 49ers in 2006. ... San Francisco hired Lisa Lang, a former executive with Intuit and Pacific Bell, as its new vice president of communications.

KEN DORSEY [Finally a winning streak!] SF 49ers news/2005 edition - Page 11 Alandon

Oh misère... J'ai envie de pleurer. Crying or Very sad

Mr. Green

Non, je peux pas croire que j'ai dit ça...
