- 49ers keep Smith off open market, sign 2 more
Early deal with Derek Smith is a coup for 49ers
By SFI staff Date: Mar 6, 2006
Whenever 2006 NFL free agency finally does begin, the 49ers will have a few less big things to worry about. They signed 10th-year linebacker Derek Smith to a three-year contract Monday afternoon, securing the services of one of their top veterans scheduled to hit the open market, and also locked up their starting fullback and a veteran backup quarterback by signing Chris Hetherington and Jesse Palmer to new deals.
The 49ers also have an agreement in principle with veteran kicker Joe Nedney, but he can not sign a contract with the team until the beginning of free agency, which is now scheduled to start at 12:01 p.m. (EST) Thursday after the deadline for CBA negotiations was extended for a second time late Sunday.
Coach Mike Nolan also filled out his 2006 coaching staff by announcing he has signed Pep Hamilton as the team’s new offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach. Hamilton spent the last three seasons coaching on the offensive side of the ball with the New York Jets, spending the 2005 season as New York’s receivers coach.
Hamilton replaces Ben McAdoo, who served as San Francisco’s assistant offensive line/offensive quality control coach last season. McAdoo was allowed to leave the 49ers and follow Mike McCarthy to Green Bay when McCarthy – San Francisco’s offensive coordinator in 2005 – was named Packers head coach in January.
Smith was one of San Francisco’s prime targets among the 15 veterans who are/were scheduled to hit the open market as unrestricted free agents when free agency begins. In an interview late Monday afternoon, Smith said there was receiving high interest from other teams, but he wanted to end his career in San Francisco because he believes in the direction Nolan has the 49ers headed.
Keeping Smith off the open market is something of a coup for the 49ers, because he likely would have received a higher offer elsewhere than the contract he ultimately signed to stay in San Francisco. The deal is reportedly worth $8 million.
It also was important to the 49ers to get a new deal in place with Hetherington, which has been in the works for several weeks, to give the team stability at the fullback position in 2006. Hetherington, an 11th-year veteran, took the starting job away from 2003 Pro Bowler Fred Beasley midway through the 2005 season and was clearly the team’s choice over Beasley – also scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent – at fullback as the 49ers move forward. The 49ers are likely to bring in a young prospect at fullback this spring to groom behind Hetherington.
The Niners also like Palmer – best known for his role as “The Bachelor” on the television hit series – as a veteran mentor to Alex Smith at quarterback who won’t be inclined to challenge Smith for the starting job. The 49ers have talked extensively with Palmer – who was with the team for three weeks when Smith was hurt last season – for several weeks about bringing him back.
Palmer helped mentor Giants quarterback Eli Manning in 2004, and the 49ers envision him doing the same with Smith this season. Nolan last month described Palmer as “a big guy that has some talent … a guy that makes the young guys better.”
And better is what the 2006 49ers just became with Monday’s signings.

Free Agency is on hold until Thursday, and that means the Niners have a little more time to sit, wait, and analyze their choices. Here are some of the names that have been thrown around as drawing interest from the 49ers.
Jeb Putzier (Tight End) - Putzier was the first name mentioned when the offseason started. The Niners have a strong interest, along with the Jets. However the Niners will have to convince him that he will eventually be the No. 1 option at the position.
Will Witherspoon (Outside Linebacker) - With the potential loses of Peterson, Carter & Smith Moore the Niners are thin at LB, with Jeff Ulbrich the only one under contract. Witherspoon will demand top dollar. Other teams showing interest: Vikings, Saints & Jaguars.
Marquand Manuel (Free Safety) - Niners have a spot open at FS with Mike Rumph moving back to corner. Niners would like to make a run at Manuel, but seems that the Seahawks will do what it takes to re-sign him due to the unknown status on Ken Hamelin. Hawks & Niners are the only teams showing interest.
Sam Madison (Cornerback) - 4 Time Pro Bowler should garner a little interest for the Ninerrs, but age may come into factor. He would give the secondary much needed veteran help. At this time the New York Giants seem to be showing the most interest.
Andre Dyson (Cornerback) - Another solid DB who may come cheaper than Madison. He is also younger, and played well for the Seahawks down the stretch. He is a West Coast guy played ball in Utah. So maybe staying close to home might factor in. At this time not many other teams are showing interest, just like last season where Dyson waited out the FA rush and ended up signing in Seattle.
Ben Leber (Outside Linebacker) - Chargers let Leber test free agency and appears that the two teams showing the most interest are the 49ers and Vikings. Latest reports are that Leber and the Vikings have already reached some sort of verbal agreeement. If this is infact true then it appears that Witherspoon would be off the Vikings radar.

Putzier? Bof...

- Bryant gets bonus in excess of $5M from 49ers
By John Clayton ESPN.com
The 49ers swapped the potential of wide receiver Brandon Lloyd for two draft choices from the Redskins, but they replaced him with one of the best receivers left on the free agent market.
Antonio Bryant agreed to a four-year, $15 million deal with the 49ers that included a signing bonus in excess of $5 million. The irony of Bryant's signing is that the 49ers tried to sign his replacement in Cleveland, Joe Jurevicius.
Jurevicius signed a four-year, $10 million deal with the Browns in order to return to his hometown. Bryant went to the 49ers to be their No. 1 receiver.
He's coming off a 1,009 yard season with the Browns after catching 69 passes. He will reunite with a former teammate of his at the University of Pittsburgh, halfback Kevan Barlow.
Bryant, 25, has been in the league four seasons.

- 49ers show interest in CB Harris and TE Shea; Pursue Chris Hope
Wednesday, March 15, 2006 at 00:21:35 Source: 49erswebzone.com
CB Walt Harris expected to visit
The Press Democrat reports that free agent cornerback Walt Harris is expected to visit with the San Francisco 49ers soon. At 5'11" and 190 lbs, Harris has 10 years of NFL experience. He spent his first six years with the Chicago Bears, two with the Indianapolis Colts and his last two seasons with the Washington Redskins.
Harris overcame knee surgery in the 2004 offseason to play in 16 games with two starts, recording 21 tackles (12 solo), two interceptions and one forced fumble. He has played in at least 12 games during each of his 10 seasons and has 20 career interceptions.
Interest in TE Aaron Shea
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, the San Francisco 49ers have expressed an interest in free agent Aaron Shea. The 6'3" 248 lb tight end has spent the last 6 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He has played in 65 games, pulled in 97 catches for 851 yards and 7 touchdowns during his career.
49ers pursue safety Chris Hope
The San Francisco 49ers hope to visit with free safety Chris Hope, a member of Pittsburgh's Super Bowl-winning team, sometime this week.
When 49ers.com asked if the team is pursuing Hope and whether he be coming in for a visit, Nolan said, "Yes we are. I don't have it set. I anticipate it in the next few days." FOXSports.com also reports that Hope will visit sometime this week.
Last season, Hope had 96 tackles in 16 games with 3 interceptions. He has spent his entire career in Pittsburgh and would be a big addition to the 49ers secondary.
49ers meet with Lal Heneghan again
The Press Democrat also reports that the 49ers have once again met with former Cleveland Browns executive Lal Heneghan. Heneghan has previously interviewed with the team for the open high-level front-office position.
