GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't want one NFL team in Los Angeles. He wants two.

The California governor will probably have to be satisfied with half of his wish -- at least in the near future.

Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and a committee of 11 owners heard presentations Tuesday from officials representing Los Angeles, Anaheim and Pasadena, three cities that want a club. The area has been without an NFL franchise for more than a decade.

Schwarzenegger went first. After meeting with the owners, the actor-turned-politician emerged to say he was there to make sure "we're getting not only one NFL team to the Los Angeles area, Southern California, but to actually get two teams. That's why I came. Why limit it?"

New York Giants chairman Steve Tisch, a longtime Los Angeles resident who is on the committee, said that was highly unlikely.

"I'd be shocked if the suggestion internally to recommend two teams ever comes up. I think the numbers are too big. I think it would be an overwhelming suggestion," Tisch said.

Added Tagliabue: "One team is our immediate goal. Long term, I think two is a realistic goal."

The 11 owners spent six hours listening to California politicians and deemed it a significant step in getting the NFL back to nation's second-largest television market. Tagliabue has made that a priority since both the Rams and Raiders left after the 1994 season.

"The fact that we're here and doing what we're doing is better than anything I could say," Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "This is the strongest effort I've seen on the league's part."

Los Angeles plans to construct a stadium within the shell of the existing Los Angeles Coliseum. Anaheim is offering a 53-acre tract of land for the stadium and economic development. Pasadena, considered a longshot, provided an update on the Rose Bowl.

"Everybody came away feeling it was some of the best time they've spent on NFL business in recent months," Tagliabue said. "For our owners to get this type of firsthand dialogue and a firsthand opportunity to speak to the political leadership of these communities, and the governor, gives us a lot (of information) to digest."

The owners' committee, which includes Dan Rooney of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Bob Kraft of the New England Patriots, didn't have an opportunity after the presentations Tuesday to talk alone as a group. They planned a conference call next week.

The committee will meet again at the NFL spring meetings in Denver May 22, and make a presentation to the rest of the owners the following day. It is unclear whether they will be able to make a recommendation at that point.

"I think there's a possibility. I don't know if there's a real possibility," Denver owner Pat Bowlen said.

"I'm not going to rush," said Tagliabue, who has announced he will retire this summer. "I've also emphasized that this is the year for us to make some decisions up or down. We're not going to keep moving sideways."

The estimates for $800 million for the stadium projects, which the NFL is expected to finance, are considerably higher than previous price tags.

When the NFL expanded in 2002, the new team went to Houston after Los Angeles leaders couldn't agree on a suitable site for the team.

Los Angeles officials showed conceptual artist renderings of the plans for the Coliseum, host of the 1932 and 1984 Olympics and home to the Rams from 1946-70 and the Raiders from 1982-94.

The 67,000-seat reconstruction includes 15,000 club seats, 500 luxury boxes and state-of-the-art amenities. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the City Council has already agreed to allow for up to $25 million in local tax revenues generated by a stadium renovation to be earmarked for redevelopment projects around the Coliseum.

"It's a deal they can't refuse," Villaraigosa said. "Los Angeles makes the absolute best sense."

Anaheim's plan calls for a new facility near Angel Stadium, which was converted to a baseball-only complex. The Rams and the Los Angeles Angels once shared that stadium.

Beside a new stadium, Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle said his city's proposed site includes room for more than 750,000 square feet of commercial and office development, a 500-unit hotel and residential areas. Plus, the land in Orange County would be owned by the new NFL franchise.

Tu parles d'une obsession... Y'a plus de NFL à LA depuis 10 ans, et alors? La NFL ne s'en porte pas trop mal et les locaux ont toujours USC et UCLA pour leur dose de gridiron. En parlant de ça, je suis pas persuadé que les fans des Trojans ou Bruins iraient au stade le dimanche en plus du samedi.
Et qui ils enverraient là-bas?
Les Chargers? Apparement, ils vont s'arranger pour rester près de San Diego.
Les Bills? Peut-être... mais TMQ (encore lui, oui) a une théorie qui irait à l'encontre d'un déménagement des pauvres successeurs de Jim Kelly et Thurman Thomas.
Les Saints? Je crois que le prochain commish' n'aura pas le coeur à enlever Reggie Bush à la population de NO.
Une Expansion Team? Maintenant que les divisions sont bien carrées et presque bien réparties géographiquement, ils vont pas tout remettre bancal!

On a qu'à leur envoyer les Browns !!!

Quand tu penses qu'ils ont le jouers le plus exitant à voir jouer en NBA et qu'ils le sifflent quand il fait un match moyen c dire qu'ils ont une faible connaissance du basket...
D'ailleurs même Jordan disait que à Chicago les Bears étaient les chouchous du public....

Certaines sont vraiment stylées, dommage qu'il ne soit pas possible de les recuperer dans une meilleure resolution

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., May 15 — If the National Football League, spurred by Reggie Bush, revises its decades-old rules about what uniform numbers can be assigned to which positions on the field, the person most affected on each team may be a member of the equipment staff.

"You might be opening up a Pandora's box," said the Giants' equipment director, Joe Skiba, who doles out the numbers worn by the team's players.

The league may modify the numbering system that dictates, among other things, that quarterbacks wear jerseys in the single digits or teens, and that the 50's be reserved for linebackers and centers. The system has been in place since 1973 and has been challenged only a few times, most notably by Seattle Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth in 1987 and several times by Edgerrin James, the former Indianapolis Colts and current Arizona Cardinals running back.

The N.F.L. did not budge in those cases, but it did revise the rule two years ago, allowing receivers — long relegated to the 80's — to take a number in the teens if they were rookies or if they were on a new team.

The latest request for a revision may bring a big one. Bush, the New Orleans Saints rookie running back, is hoping to keep No. 5, which he wore at Southern California on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy last year. For now, N.F.L. running backs and defensive backs must wear a number from 20 to 49.

The N.F.L. is deciding whether the number system is necessary, and if not, to what extent players should be free to choose their numbers. Next week, the eight-member competition committee will probably recommend that the team owners adopt a more flexible system starting in 2007 — one that allows running backs and receivers to choose a number from 1 to 49. At least 24 of the league's 32 teams would have to approve a revision.

Delaying the change for a year would provide time to handle the logistics of having veterans swap numbers in midcareer. Mainly, it would give time to sell already-made jerseys to fans.

The issue has marketing and practical aspects. Some players like a number because they think it somehow fits them or it has long been identified with them. Perhaps a 00, a number currently not allowed but being requested by Cleveland Browns center and guard LeCharles Bentley, would sell better than the No. 65 he wore with the Saints.

Teams, especially those like the Giants that have retired 10 or more jersey numbers in honor of former players, sometimes run out of numbers for certain positions. That prompted the league to open the teens to receivers, giving rise to Keyshawn Johnson's No. 19, Randy Moss's No. 18 and Plaxico Burress's No. 17, among others.

Moss's Raiders jersey was the top-selling jersey last year, the N.F.L. said, with more than $10 million in retail sales. Moss's cut from jersey sales last year was probably between $300,000 and $400,000. The players union receives 8.5 percent of each jersey's wholesale price, and players receive 75 percent of that amount; wholesale prices are roughly half of the retail price. Bush has offered to give 25 percent of his earnings from the sales of No. 5 Saints jerseys to Hurricane Katrina relief funds.

For now, mostly because of the N.F.L.'s rules, players do not spend much time pondering their numbers.

J'espère qu'ils ne vont pas céder au caprice du rookie.
De plus, cette numérotation des joueurs est utile aux arbitres. Ils leur servent à identifier rapidement les mecs sur le terrain et surtout à savoir s'ils sont éligibles ou non pour capter une passe (un gars avec le #64 qui "pique un sprint" de 20y pour attraper le cuir, ça doit quelque peu interpeler les zèbres).
Et imaginez un Nose Tackle avec le #6 ou un Kicker avec le #45, comme on en voit de temps en temps en NCAA (autre problème, avec 100 joueurs dans certains rosters, y'a plus trop de choix)... tout simplement ridicule.

La saison finie, et la draft passé, juste avant le training camp, comme on a rien à faire, les joueurs NFL se lancent une compétition judiciaire.

Terrell Owens, au début il va vous aider a flamber puis il devrait foutre sa merde comme d' habitude... surtout que son contrat est bas de gamme pour ce qu' il croit mériter.

des LB faient pour la def en 34, style le UFA des Jags Akin Ayodele ou votre 1er tour de draft Bobby Carpenter, à mon avis Carpenter est un peu surcoté, pris un peu haut à mon gout et Ayodele a un contrat important meme si il sera meilleur chez vous dans une def en 34 que chez les Jags dans une def en 43.
