Brzezinski confirmed the Vikings will bring in free-agent running back and return specialist Chad Morton on Monday for a look. Morton, 28, who has played for New Orleans (2000), the New York Jets (2001-2002) and Washington (2003-2004), appeared in only six games last season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The Redskins released him this month. Morton is the only running back scheduled for a visit. The Vikings, who have lost Onterrio Smith to an NFL suspension for the 2005 season, will "continue to monitor" the market at that spot, Brzezinski said.

SMOOT GIVES THE BOOT

Monday was the final full day of workouts for the 2005 version of Minnesota Vikings Developmental camp. Nine days of non-contact practice at nearly full speed have left the players obviously hungry for hitting. The competition between the suddenly stout defense and the always-stellar offense has been fierce and today was no different.

During team drills, Daunte Culpepper seemed determined to make a statement against the always-talking Fred Smoot, going directly at the veteran CB on a high percentage of the passing plays. There was pushing and shoving and lots of finger pointing, but in the end the defense once again held the day.
Highlights
WR Kelly Campbell used an obvious push off to beat CB Fred Smoot long down the left sidelines on a play that brought about a near riot. Two plays later WR Nate Burleson would try a similar pattern without the shove and be absolutely mauled by Smoot. Moments later Strong Safety Willie Offord would make an athletic play in the end zone to bat down a sure TD intended for Burleson. It is hard to imagine that the Vikings wide receivers will find a group of DBs more aggressive than the ones they will be facing each day during practice. Most games should come as a welcomed relief.

On a rainy day with little wind the kicking specialists were hard at work. Aaron Elling was fired up and cursing the wet field. Paul Edinger seemed reserved and all about the business of winning the job. Elling has been booming the ball off the tee but was short on a 48 yard FG during team drills. Edinger missed a 47-yarder as well, again leading one to the conclusion that this battle will last the entire off-season.

Punter Travis Dorsch has returned the to Vikings after a very successful season in the World League. There are rumblings that the young man out of Purdue may beat out veteran Darren Bennett for the punting job this year. Dorsch is not as highly paid as Bennett and can also kick-off in an emergency situation.

WR Marcus Robinson had a stellar day catching the bulk of Culpepper’s passes. The veteran has his aches and pains, but by all accounts he has had a very nice camp.

The Minnesota Vikings will wrap up developmental camp Tuesday morning with a short session at Winter Park.

Citation :
``To me, this year -- this will be my team, regardless of the fact that we're totally out of ownership,'' he said. ``It's obvious that we were involved in putting this team together.''

Citation :
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- Red McCombs is no longer in charge of the Minnesota Vikings, but he still feels like they're his team.

After signing off Tuesday on his $600 million sale of the franchise to a group headed by New Jersey real estate developer Zygi Wilf, McCombs gushed about his seven-year stint as the team's owner.

McCombs, speaking on a conference call from his San Antonio office, reminded reporters that all the offseason moves made by Minnesota were completed under his watch. After adding at least five new starters on defense, the Vikings could be a legitimate Super Bowl contender. ``To me, this year -- this will be my team, regardless of the fact that we're totally out of ownership,'' he said. ``It's obvious that we were involved in putting this team together.''

But Wilf, who was unavailable for comment, will now be calling the shots. The sale -- approved unanimously by NFL owners on May 25 -- closed late Monday, and McCombs spoke with Wilf Tuesday morning.

Before addressing the media, McCombs characterized his conversation in this statement:

``I committed my continuing lifetime interest in the Vikings and again welcomed him and his partners into the Vikings family. I have every reason to believe his ownership will mark new highlights for the Vikings. I expressed to Mr. Wilf that the Vikings' fans are the backbone of the franchise and I know all Vikings fans will welcome his ownership group with the same enthusiasm they extended to me and my family.''

Beneath the front office, it's been business as usual since McCombs first met with Arizona businessman Reggie Fowler -- now a limited investor -- in April 2004.

Coach Mike Tice is scheduled to meet with Wilf's brother, Mark, on Wednesday and with Wilf on Thursday.

``I think they're excited to be a part of what we have right now. I certainly know I would be,'' said Tice, a native New Yorker who's excited about the addition of another East Coast guy to the team.

Though McCombs' constant cost-cutting and unwillingness, until this year, to spend much on the free-agent market was a frustration for several members of the organization, this sounds like an amicable split. The team even distributed a list of highlights from the past seven seasons with McCombs in charge.

``I wish we could've won a championship for him, a division title,'' Tice said. ``Those things are coming.''

McCombs said he wasn't surprised when Fowler was replaced by Wilf as the general partner this spring, but that he didn't anticipate the league's concern about Fowler's worth.

``A lot of us at times feel like we're a lot more liquid than others see us,'' McCombs said. ``And when the NFL did their examination, they took a little different view of it.''

Always a hands-on owner, McCombs -- before insisting he's not disappointed to leave a team that looks poised to become one of the NFL's best -- said he doubted Tice's pledge to make the Vikings into more of a power-running team.

``I don't think Mike's going to listen to me on what I think he should be doing, but when you've got a quarterback like (Daunte Culpepper) who is right at the absolute peak of his career, and you have a receiving corps like we have there, I think we're going to see a lot of balls in the air.

``I'd be surprised if we didn't. I'd be disappointed if we didn't.''

Onterrio Smith is suspended for the year, but if fellow Vikings running back Michael Bennett remains healthy, that might not matter.

Bennett was clocked in 9.91 seconds and 10.0 seconds in 100-meter track races this spring.

"The 9.91 would have been a fifth-place finish in the last Olympics in Athens, Greece," Vikings running backs coach Dean Dalton said. "He's smoking."

Article complet: http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/sports/football/11904934.htm.

Quand à Bennett : Michael Bennett has run personal bests in the 100m dash of 10.18 and in the 200m of 20.66 during his college track career.

MessageSujet: Re: [Living Life The Vikings Way] Go Tarvaris !   [Living Life The Vikings Way] Go Tarvaris ! - Page 3 EmptyJeu 23 Juin - 12:06

Can the Vikings offense survive without Randy Moss?

No team is drawing more of an off-season betting buzz in Las Vegas than the Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota’s odds to win the Super Bowl have dropped everywhere, including at the Venetian hotel going from 35-1 to 14-1.
Venetian sportsbook director Mark Goldman said his casino has had more money wagered and more tickets written on the Vikings than any other team.

People see how the Vikings supposedly upgraded their defense through free agency. The signed run-stuffing tackle Pat Williams, veteran linebacker Sam Cowart, solid cornerback Fred Smoot and former Pro Bowl safety Darren Sharper. They`re joined by promising linebacker Napoleon Harris, who was acquired in a trade, and pass rusher Erasmus James, a first-round draft pick out of Wisconsin.

Certainly when you also factor in tackle Kevin Williams and cornerback Antoine Winfield, who rank among the best at their respective positions, the Vikings have their best defense since going 15-1 in 1998.

This is all on paper.
Are the Vikings really going to be this good? Their over/under regular season win total is nine games, certainly a solid figure but no better than 10 other teams, according to odds at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Still, it’s a bit scary to think of the Vikings finally with a defense. This is a team after all, that won a road playoff game last year with a pass defense that ranked fourth from the bottom and had below average linebackers. Those weaknesses look to be addressed, although you have to wonder how much Williams, Cowart and Sharper have left. Cowart and Sharper seem to be on the downside of their distinguished careers.
But while Minnesota’s defense appears greatly improved, its offense could regress despite Daunte Culpepper. If it weren’t for Peyton Manning’s record-setting season, everyone would be talking about Culpepper. It was Culpepper, not Manning, who led the NFL in passing yards (4,717) while rushing for another 406. All together, Culpepper threw and rushed for a combined 41 touchdowns.

We’re going to find out how good Culpepper really is now that he doesn’t have Randy Moss. You can talk all you want about Moss’s me-first attitude, but no player dictated coverages more than Moss. Yes, he was a royal pain. But during Weeks 6 through 10 when Moss missed three games and saw limited action in two others because of a hamstring injury, the Vikings went 2-3 and barely beat the Lions. Culpepper averaged nearly 9.5 yards per pass with Moss and barely seven yards without him. It’s doubtful rookie Troy Williamson or Nate Burleson can match Moss’s career average of nearly 16 yards per catch and 13 touchdowns a season now that the Vikes won’t have Moss to bear the brunt of opposing defenses. The Vikings also lost respected offensive coordinator, Scott Linehan. And Onterrio Smith, perhaps the club`s best pur runner, is suspended for the year follwing his now infamous `whizinator` incident.

On the plus side, those fantasy football participants who swore off ever taking Michael Bennett again may want to think twice. Bennett, supposedly finally healthy from ankle and knee surgeries the past two years, has looked faster than ever. We’re talking world-class speed.

The Vikings are a solid favorite to dethrone the Packers as NFC North Division champions at minus $1.15 (lay $115 to win $100) at Olympic, an Internet sportsbook. The Packers are next at plus $2.55 (bet $100 to win $255) followed by the Lions at plus $2.85 and Bears at a whopping plus $9.25.

Does that mean Minnesota is a good bet to win more than nine games?

The Lions and Bears both seem improved, but the NFC North still remains a weak division. The Plaza hotel in Las Vegas has pointspreads up on every NFL game for the upcoming season. They have the Vikings favored in nine games, all eight home games and by two points on the road against the Bears in Week 6.

Minnesota’s home schedule certainly doesn’t appear overly taxing with games against the Bucs, Saints, Packers, Lions, Browns, Rams, Steelers and Bears. The Bucs, Saints, Browns, Lions and Bears were a combined 28-52 last year, while the Packers and Rams look like descending teams.

The real question is, can the Vikings win more than one road game? The Plaza has them as 4 1/2-point underdogs to three teams – the Falcons in Week 4, Panthers in Week 8 and Packers in Week 11. They`re also 4-point ‘dogs to the Ravens in Week 16.

Where the Vikings could pull off away victories besides beating the Bears on the road is in Week 2 against the normally slow- starting Bengals, who like the Vikings play on FieldTurf, Week 10 against the Giants and Week 13 against the Lions. The Vikings have beaten the Lions the past three times in Detroit.

The Nov. 13 road game against the Giants, though, could be tougher than it looks because of the situation. The Vikings host the Lions the previous week and then travel to Green Bay for a Monday night game the following week.

With a revamped secondary, the possibility of having a dominant pass rush, the presence of Culpepper and a healthy Bennett, you have to believe the Vikings can achieve nine if not double-digit victories.

Zygi Wilf, the majority owner and chairman of the board for the Vikings, got a phone call from coach Mike Tice last week. The Vikings coach called after he was fined $100,000 by the NFL; he wanted to apologize for the mistake he made in scalping Super Bowl tickets.

"He apologized both to me and the team and the fans," Wilf said. "Again, we both spoke about looking forward to a great season, and hopefully we can get this behind us."

Neutral

Bon choix Sharper.......

Packers dodge injury

As a change of pace during the Green Bay Packers' June minicamp, coach Mike Sherman brought the team inside to the gym at Lambeau Field.

The entire team, including coaches and staff, then engaged in an intense dodgeball tournament.

"It was a good event in regard to the chemistry of the team," Sherman said. "Everybody was having a good time."

The good news was that no one was injured.

"Obviously, you always worry about those things," Sherman said. "But we played paintball one year and I think (former safety) Darren Sharper fell out of a tree, so this was probably safer. We've done bowling and guys have hurt their backs and balls changed lanes so this might have been the safest exercise."

Citation :
CHARLEY WALTERS

Vikings Pro Bowl center Matt Birk, who six weeks ago underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip, said Thursday he guarantees he will play in the season opener Sept. 11 against Tampa Bay at the Metrodome. Birk will begin running next week.

"I feel great; this right hip will not keep me out of the regular-season opener," said Birk, 28, who has been working out regularly at Winter Park. "That's 100 percent guaranteed. I'm like superhuman. At least that's what I tell myself."

The Vikings are curious about Eddie George. The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports the team has been in contact with the agent for the veteran running back. George rushed for 432 yards and four touchdowns for the Cowboys last year. Very Happy
