10 juin 2004.Moss rates Collins over Culpepper

Randy Moss says his new quarterback with the Oakland Raiders, Kerry Collins, is better overall than his former quarterback, Daunte Culpepper of the Vikings.

Moss, traded by the Vikings to the Raiders this spring, said so during an ESPN "SportsCenter'' interview.

"When it comes to athleticism, Daunte has Kerry beat by a large margin," the controversial wide receiver said. "But Kerry has pocket presence and knows how to read defenses. So Kerry has a slight step over Daunte."

Moss talk 'crazy,' Culpepper says

Pioneer Press

Daunte Culpepper was asked Tuesday his reaction to ex-teammate Randy Moss' ESPN interview during which the eccentric wide receiver asserted that his new Oakland Raiders teammate Kerry Collins is a better overall quarterback than the Vikings' Pro Bowl QB.

Culpepper smiled quizzically, then shook his head.

"When I first heard that, I figured maybe Randy had fallen and bumped his head to say something that crazy," Culpepper said. "All they've got to do is look at the numbers. I mean no disrespect to Kerry Collins. I understand that (Moss) has to say something good about his quarterback. But he didn't have to say anything that crazy."

J'avais raison. Il fallait pas trader Randy. Un point c'est tout.

I wrote off Daunte Culpepper's train-wreck performance in Week 1 as rust. But I'm afraid the remedy in Minnesota requires more than just a coat of Krylon. For the second consecutive week, Culpepper looked as if he was playing quarterback for the first time. He was sacked twice, threw five interceptions and looked incredibly indecisive in the pocket. It sure looked like he would have benefited from just tucking the ball under his armpit and running instead of waiting for a receiver to get open. People will point to the absence of Randy Moss as the issue here. I think that's fair. The Vikings have no identity on offense, and at least in the past they had the "when in doubt, throw it to Randy" option. Culpepper is struggling to figure out which players to lean on. Let's face it: The team has way too many viable options. In the backfield, who is the go-to guy? Mewelde Moore, Michael Bennett or Moe Williams? That's still as big a mystery as ever. And, at receiver, the Vikings have Nate Burleson, Travis Taylor, Marcus Robinson and Troy Williamson. And to confuse things even more, Minnesota recently signed Koren Robinson. Even at tight end, Culpepper has a worthy twosome in Jermaine Wiggins and Jim Kleinsasser. My suggestion for head coach Mike Tice would be to figure out which players he wants at the front and center of his offense and allow Culpepper to develop chemistry with those guys. Sometimes less is more.

• WR Nate Burleson sprained his left knee in the third quarter when his cleat stuck in the ground. He will be examined today and likely will undergo an MRI.

• CB Antoine Winfield left in the third quarter because of blisters on both of his feet that broke open. Winfield returned but eventually was pulled from the game. "It's tough right now to even stand on them," Winfield said. "I don't know how long it will take to heal, but I'm sure every time I start running, it will peel back off, and I'll just have to fight through it."

• QB Daunte Culpepper bruised the middle finger on his throwing (right) hand. Athletic trainer Chuck Barta did not think an X-ray would be necessary.

• FS Darren Sharper sprained his left knee in the second quarter and returned on the Bengals' next series but was removed in the second half. Sharper's injury is of concern because he missed much of last season because of a partially torn posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

• OT Bryant McKinnie (sprained left foot) played the entire game.

• WR Marcus Robinson strained the index finger on his right hand but said he was fine.

• DT Spencer Johnson (left knee sprain) played regularly.

• DE Kenechi Udeze (right calf strain) left in the third quarter.

Michael Bennett had high hopes Sunday morning when he walked into Paul Brown Stadium.

The Vikings had built their offensive game plan around his skills, hoping to employ screen passes and outside runs to pull off a road victory against the Bengals.

But after fumbling twice in the first half, leading to 10 Cincinnati points, Bennett spent the second half on the bench. He saw action on only six plays in the Vikings' 37-8 loss, rushing for a team-high 36 yards on three carries.

"I just hate that when I make a mistake, I've got to come out all the time. It's not like, 'Get back in there and make up for it.' It's a mistake, and I've got to come out. It's like, when am I going to get back in there? I've just got to try to be perfect to keep playing football."

Citation :
From the St. Paul Pioneer Press: "Culpepper: It's Tough"

"The Vikings' offensive leader admitted he might have been guilty of pressing at times, but he insists his struggles have nothing to do with the offseason departures of wide receiver Randy Moss (to Oakland) and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan (to Miami).

"The thing is, they're not here," Culpepper said. "If we played like we played today, if we had coach Linehan and Moss, the same thing would have happened. There's no magic solution to it. If you play like we played, you're going to lose, no matter who you have on the field."

Culpepper wasn't the only culprit for the Vikings, who lost the ball twice on Michael Bennett fumbles and allowed the Bengals to pile up 504 yards of total offense, including 337 yards passing and three touchdowns by Carson Palmer.

Culpepper suffered a bruised right middle finger in the fourth quarter but said it will be fine, and the Vikings said the same goes for their star quarterback.

"We know what type of quarterback he is," wide receiver Nate Burleson said. "He's our leader. We're just going to keep believing in him and keep working."

Cornerback Fred Smoot took that a step further.

"Believe me, Daunte is such a competitor, you'll never see him play like that again," Smoot said. "That's a promise. I know him. He's going to regroup, and he won't let what people have to say bring him down. I'm with him 100 percent — best quarterback in the league."

Vikings are NFL's biggest loser
By John Ryan
Mercury News

NBC airs its reality show, ``The Biggest Loser,'' on Tuesday nights. The NFL does its version every Sunday, featuring the Minnesota Vikings and Randy Moss, post-divorce.

Maybe if the Raiders had won Sunday night -- meaning, maybe if they had looked Moss' way on the final series -- The Grate One wouldn't have had ``security'' shooing away reporters and he could have expounded on zero-TD, eight-INT Daunte Culpepper. But with both teams 0-2, Morning Buzz is left to handicap the race.

Which is easy. There's no bigger NFL loser than the Vikings. And Moss is after all leading the NFL in receiving, so all is right in fantasyland, and that's where he takes up residence anyway, eh?

TAMPA - There is a place in football where anything goes, where players spit, punch, kick and inflict immense pain with little fear of repercussions. Those who wind up in this place must be prepared to hear disturbing sounds and see horrific sights.

What happens at the bottom of the pile is not for the faint of heart.

"If you could put a microphone in that pile, you would be shocked," Bucs offensive tackle Kenyatta Walker said. "Especially when it's a division game. It's definitely not for your mother's ears."

Or her eyes.

What is said at the bottom of the stack of bodies isn't printable in a family publication. What is done is no better. Based on a sampling of experiences shared by Bucs offensive and defensive linemen, the actions include eye-gouging, punches to the stomach, spitting in faces, grabbing and twisting opponents' groins, and, well, you get the picture.

"That's the underworld of football down there," defensive lineman Ellis Wyms said. "There's a whole other game going on down there. It's dirty and it's nasty. I've seen guys spit in guys' mouths, put snot in other guys' mouths. You name it. It's just grimy."

Even players who aren't grimy off the field sometimes resort to grimy tactics on it. What would you do if someone pressed a fist full of muddy turf in your face, like a player once did to center John Wade?

"You're going through the game and maybe a guy has done something to you over the course of the game, or he's gotten on your nerves, or he said something to you, when you get him at the bottom of that pile and you get an opportunity to give something back, you're going to give it," Wyms said.

"That's the perfect opportunity for retaliation."

But that's where this gets tricky.

Everyone wants to stand up for himself, but no one wants to face the wrath of his coach if those retaliatory actions result in a penalty.

"It's really not the smartest thing to do because it's always the retaliating guy who gets penalized," Wade said. "That's a fact. You don't want to be the guy who sits there and acts like, "Oh, I guess I just have to take it.' But you also don't want to be the guy who's getting 15-yard penalties and killing drives, either. There's a fine line.

"You really have to pick your spots. That's doesn't mean you're dirty. It just means that when you get a chance to return the favor somebody gave you, you return it. That might take more than that game. You might have to wait until the next time you play. It might be next season."

How to avoid getting caught is practically a science among players, which might explain why most of this stuff is never witnessed by the tens of thousands of fans who watch games on TV and in stadiums across the league. Wyms is certain there are actions taking place on every play that deserve to be penalized, but officials "just can't police everything."

Some methods used to avoid getting flagged are obvious, like doing your dirt away from the ball, where the officials' attention is unlikely to be focused. But some fall under the category of veteran savvy.

"Trust me, there are ways," defensive tackle Chris Hovan said. "If the ref is standing right there, am I going to do anything? No, of course not. That's going to hinder your team. But when you get a shot, I'm not going to lie, you take it. It's about the right place at the right time."

Or the wrong place.

That would be the bottom of any pile in which there is a loose ball. That is when football becomes less about a game and more about survival.

"I can't say that I'm really the first guy to jump in there," Wyms admits. "I'll pick up a fumble. But I don't want to be the one at the bottom of the pile on top of the ball. If you're down there and you have that ball, you're about to get a whole lot coming your way. They're definitely about to do something unthinkable to you."

Said Hovan: "That's when all bets are off. It's primal."

Some players are considered more primal than others. Though film sessions usually are used to break down things like blitz packages, they also can be useful in determining where the cheap shots are going to come from.

"A lot of people get labeled," Hovan said. "Word spreads and film doesn't lie. You know who's dirty and who's not."

Hovan was a bit reluctant to name names, but there is one such player in his locker room every day.

"Greg Spires is probably one of the nastiest players in the league when you get in a pile," Wyms said, showing no regard for Spires, who was standing about three feet away.

"Greg will do anything to anybody at any time. I've seen this man do some stuff to guys that just insulted their manhood."

Such as? Try choking and punching, for starters. So, Greg, what do you have to say for yourself?

"Hey, it is what it is," he said. "You do what you gotta do."

Vikings’ Improved Chemistry Makes Losing Fun

MINNEAPOLIS--The Vikings jettisoned unhappy receiver Randy Moss this offseason in hopes of improving team chemistry. Two weeks into the season, it looks like the experiment worked. The 2005 Vikings have such great chemistry that they’ve even started to enjoy losing, something they’ll probably be doing a lot of this year.

“I can’t tell you how much different it is around here,” said quarterback Daunte Culpepper. “It’s like a big weight has been lifted from our shoulders ever since Randy left. When he was hear everyone was walking on eggshells. Now we’re just loose and having fun. That game against the Bengals was a blast, man. I'm just having a lot of fun playing the game right now.”

The Vikings have lost their first two games, turning the ball over 12 times in the process. Daunte Culpepper has looked lost, and their new, expensive defense has been a failure. Still, it’s all fun and games in the Vikings clubhouse.

“I never knew it what it felt like to be on a team with good chemistry, a team of guys that really pulls for each other,” said running back Michael Bennett. “I know our offense is terrible right now, and our defense is completely ineffective, but we're not going to worry. If this was last year there would be a lot of tension and finger-pointing. I'm glad that's over, because some of those fingers would probably be pointing at me.”

An example of the team’s camaraderie came Sunday night after their 37-8 drubbing at the hands of the Bengals. Culpepper threw five interceptions, but his teammates didn’t get down on him. Instead, they gave him some words of encouragement.

“Poor Daunte threw the game away, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to get down on him,” Bennett said. “We’re going to give him our support. No matter what happens, he’s still a great quarterback. There's no reason to hang your head. I just keep reminding him to look at the bright side: Mike Tice is going to be fired soon. We're a few tantalizing weeks away from having a legitimate head coach.”

Mike Tice is indeed on the hot seat. The Vikings were a trendy pick to win the NFC this year, and the blame for the team’s failures has been placed squarely on Tice’s shoulders. All he can do now is try to stay focused and get his team back on track.

“I’ve heard all the talk about me being on the hot seat,” Tice told reporters yesterday. “I can’t pay attention to that. I’ve got to get this team ready to play every week. There are a lot of new guys on the roster now and they’re still getting used to the system. It’s difficult because there were so many plays designed for Randy Moss that don’t work anymore. For instance, when we run a Randy slant, the pass just falls to the ground because Randy’s not there. Wait a minute…we should just have another guy run the pattern in his place, then he can catch the ball. Holy shit I have to go write that down! I just made my first adjustment!”

Tice’s situation is complicated by the fact that the team has a new owner. Zygmunt Wilf, a New Jersey-based businessman, purchased the team last year from Red McCombs. He is itching to make some changes, and Tice could be the first causality.

When reached for comment, however, Wilf said he had no plans to fire the coach.

“Mike Tice is our head coach and I have full confidence in him,” Wilf said. “Two games is not enough time to gauge where a team is going. I’m still expecting to turn this thing around. Take it from me, an Orthodox Jewish shopping-mall magnate. I know football.”

There may be a lot of turmoil surrounding the franchise these days, but the Vikings can handle it. The relaxed, laid back attitude in the locker room is a reminder of just how important team chemistry can be.

“We’re not the same team we were in years past,” said Culpepper. “The difference is like night and day. There’s no more bickering on the sidelines, no more controversy, no more beautiful long passes into the end zone, no more offensive game plan. No more wins, either. Those days are over, and from the looks of it, they're not coming back anytime soon.”

Wink
