- -http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl- a écrit:
- Mike Holmgren sounded tired and a little frustrated. But there was a hint of internal conflict, and it didn't seem to have anything to do with losing the Super Bowl.
Syllable by syllable Wednesday, the Seattle Seahawks head coach sounded like a guy nudging open the door for a possible departure from the Pacific Northwest. Maybe for retirement. Maybe for another job.
The latter may sound preposterous, but that's what some said in 1996 when the New England Patriots were headed for an eventual Super Bowl loss and conjecture started to swirl about Bill Parcells. At the time, Parcells seemed worn down by his battles with ownership, had some health concerns, was thought to be getting long in the coaching tooth and started to sound like a guy that might be eyeing an NFL landscape where only he was king. Certainly, it's not the same circumstances as Holmgren – his relationship with the Seahawks' front office and owner Paul Allen is better than it has ever been – but there are still some interesting parallels.
First and foremost, it's hard to forget that this is a job that Holmgren had to be talked back into only one year ago. Had it not been for Allen's remastering of the front office, Holmgren might have spent last season cooling his heels before getting swept up in the musical chairs of NFL jobs. And while a run to the Super Bowl may have pumped life back into the daily toil, Holmgren seems to feel drained by the emotional rollercoaster he's ridden the last 24 months. He had disappeared for the most part since the Super Bowl XL loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, leaving his post on the competition committee partially as protest to the Super Bowl officiating. Mostly, though, he felt he couldn't put in the extra time the committee required.
Then came what has been a remarkably frustrating offseason. Not only has Holmgren continued to gnash his teeth over the Super Bowl – he says he's over it, but it's hard to believe after listening to him this week at the owners meetings – but he has also been drained by the team's drama in free agency.
He was surprised by the loss of wide receiver Joe Jurevicius, whose departure registered as merely a tremor compared to the Steve Hutchinson defection. When you listen to him talk about that ordeal, it sounds like he wishes he had played more of a role.
"I was not involved in the negotiations," Holmgren said, "but I think the feeling was that we would have a better chance to sign (Hutchinson) to a long-term contract and keep the conversations going under that (transition) tag. So, I think that was a valid conclusion.
"Steve liked it here in Seattle. Anything he had ever talked to me about was that he wanted to stay. But it blew up on us. … We probably should have franchised him but we didn't."
To be fair, Holmgren never blamed anyone for losing Hutchinson, but he sounded like a guy giving off the vibes of "I would have done it differently." Does that mean Holmgren would have applied the franchise tag on Hutchinson and worked through the consequences? Possibly. Or maybe he just wanted to be a bigger part of the decision-making process when it came to what the Seahawks could afford and the tactics that would be used in negotiations.
One thing is certain – Holmgren clearly still pines for total control, whether that's wearing only the general manager hat or acting in total autonomy as he did when he arrived in Seattle. And though he's seemed to heal from having his general manager title stripped from him a few years back, Holmgren still sounds like a man who thinks his failure was a side-effect of circumstance.
Asked if he could still envision himself as a coach and general manager, Holmgren said, "That's something that is lingering there."
"It was different," he said of his first year as Seahawks coach and GM. "When I came into Seattle it wasn't quite the way I thought it was going to be. I made the statement in Green Bay that I would never leave for another coaching job and I meant that. To leave Seattle for just another coaching job, I wouldn't do that. I'm not sure I'd like to do that."
Holmgren termed any destination as "the right situation." And the right situation would likely have to be rich – maybe as rich as any in the league – and all-powerful. But it remains to be seen whether Holmgren wants to continue coaching at all. Like Parcells, he can sound like a guy that doesn't seem far removed from retirement, but he can also sound like a guy who would be chewing his arm off if he was away from football for more than a year or two.
Whatever his future is, Holmgren maintains that we'll all find out soon enough. The final year of his contract runs through 2006, and he intends to let the Seahawks know what he wants to do beyond that year. Allen has intimated that he would like to talk extension. Meanwhile, Holmgren only sounds non-committal.
"Right now I'm kind of thinking about what I want to do, honestly," he said. "I told (Seahawks president) Tim Ruskell that I'm not going to leave anybody hanging out to dry. As soon as I have made a decision, then he will know. And then at the same time the last thing in the whole world I want it to be is a distraction for the team next year. And it shouldn't be. Life goes on. But I'm still working through it in my own mind about what I'd like to do. I should have a little bit of a better handle on it in two or three weeks.
"I'm not being cute or leveraging anything or doing anything like that. I want to be fair and I want to be honest with my bosses and certainly my owner. So I just asked them, give me some time on this. And they said fine."
For a man coming off a Super Bowl, Holmgren sounds remarkably unsettled. That alone seems to open his future to what would have seemed unthinkable a month ago.
A goodbye. | |

- Citing an unnamed source, the Palm Beach Post reported Wednesday that the Bengals have offered Joey Harrington a one-year contract but now are balking at the Lions' trade demand. Once believed to be a deep second-day pick, the Lions' asking price has upped to a third- or fourth-round pick. The Dolphins reportedly have a two-year deal in place with Harrington but also are refusing to trade a higher pick to Detroit.

- Veteran Colts cornerback Nick Harper wants more money or he wants out. At least, that's what he's telling anybody who will listen. Harper, who was involved in two highly publicized off-field domestic disturbances last season, wants a pay hike and is planning to sit out the team's voluntary off-season conditioning program as well as any future team functions until it happens.
