http://fishduck.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Chip-complete.pdf

Citation :
WHY RUN THE SPREAD?
. Makes the defense cover the entire field
. Faster scoring
. Gets speed in space
. The defense cannot disguise
. Simple reads for quarterback
[...]
We are a spread team, but we run the ball. We averaged 300 yards rushing last year. We run the ball better than we throw the ball. We are effective running the ball because we have bigger lanes through which to run the ball. The reason for that is the number of people we have to run through.

lf there are seven defenders in the box. there are only four defenders to play the pass. lt is difficult to play man-to-man without help all day long. lt lets you define the defense. For a quarterback, it is simple. There is one high safety, two high safeties, or no high safety.

lf there are two high safeties, mathematically there can only be five defenders in the box. With one high safety, there can be six in the box. lf there is no high saf ety, there can be seven in the box.
With two high safeties, we should run the ball most of the time. We have five blockers, and they have five defenders. We feel if we can get a hat on all five defenders, our running back should make
yards. lf the defense has one high safety and six defenders in the box, the quarterback has to be involved in the play. He has to read one of the defenders, in effect blocking him. We can block five defenders and read the sixth one.
[...]

Citation :
As for guys whose hands were impressive last year, the Eagles have 2 of the top 3. #1 in the league is Jason Avant, who was not credited with a single drop on any of the 53 catchable balls thrown his way.

The other good hands guy is none other than DeSean Jackson, who finished with a drop rate of 2.13, good for third best in the NFL. PFF credited him with just one drop this season. It's a major reversal for DeSean, who was previously one of the worst in the league in terms of drop rate.

The numbers back up what we saw from DeSean this past year. Prior to his injury, he was on pace for career highs in catches and yards and really looked like a guy who had fully rededicated himself after getting a big contract. Here's hoping the trend continues next season.

Citation :
The Philadelphia Eagles will hire former Cleveland Browns linebackers coach Billy Davis as their new defensive coordinator, according to Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly. Davis has served as a defensive coordinator twice before, with the 49ers from 2005-06 and the Cardinals from 2009-10. In both of his stints as a coordinator, Davis has run a 3-4 defense, which it appears the Eagles will transition to under new head coach Chip Kelly. Bleeding Green Nation has more on the hiring and notes that Davis has been a NFL assistant since 1992 and served under 3-4 masterminds such as Wade Phillips, Dom Capers and Mike Nolan.

Citation :
Alabama offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is leaving Tuscaloosa to become the offensive line coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, according to footballscoop.com. Stoutland has a reputation for being a very good recruiter, and the timing makes sense that he would leave right after National Signing Day.

Citation :
With Kelly reportedly not as high on Foles as some believe, and Vick's future in doubt, La Canfora won't be surprised if the Eagles make a run at Alex Smith, who the 49ers will either trade or cut prior to the NFL Draft. Smith lost his starting job in San Francisco to Colin Kaepernick midway through the 2012 season. Smith doesn't have the speed that Kelly's quarterbacks at Oregon had, but he is an accurate passer. Smith completed a career-high 70.2 percent of his passes in 2012, and averaged 7.97 yards per attempt -- also a career-high. Entering his age 29 season, Smith could well be entering the prime of his career, and his accuracy will certainly attract many teams this offseason.

Citation :
Overview:

Alex Smith is a mobile quarterback with good quickness, agility, and awareness. He has a solid throwing motion, and he displayed fantastic accuracy completing 68% of his passes his senioryear. He has the athletic ability to be a threat running the ball as well as throwing it.
Smith is also a very intelligent quarterback who reads defenses well and makes good, quick decisions. He has a tremendous work ethic on the field as well as in the film room, and he displays good leadership qualities.

The junior from Utah doesn't possess the strongest arm in the draft and might fit best in a West Coast style of offense, but he can make all the throws to be successful in the NFL, and he remains accurate when he's on the run. He has good, quick footwork, sound mechanics, and a high release point.
With the lack of a bona fide potential superstar quarterback in the 2005 NFL Draft, Smith's stock has risen higher than it probably would have in most years. Some draft boards have him as the No. 1 selection overall, but I think he'll be the second QB off the board behind California's Aaron Rogers.
Stats
In three seasons at Utah, Smith completed 389-of-587 pass attempts for 5,203 yards and 47 touchdowns while throwing just 8 interceptions. He also ran 286 times for 1,072 yards and 15 touchdowns.

During his junior season, in which he led the Utes to a perfect 12-0 record, he completed 214-of-317 pass attempts (67.5%) for 2,952 yards and 32 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He also ran 135 times for 631 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Laughing

Citation :
When the Eagles announced new head coach Chip Kelly’s full coaching staff, one of the names on the list was Shaun Huls, the new sports science coordinator.

That raises a couple of questions: Who is Shaun Huls, and what is a sports science coordinator?

According to USA Today, Huls was the strength, conditioning and combatives coordinator for Navy Special Warfare, meaning he was training Navy SEALs before he took a job in which he’ll be training the Eagles.

That’s a surprising background for someone to become an NFL assistant coach, but with Kelly, maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise. In a 2010 interview with the New York Times, Kelly said that in preparing his Oregon team for the up-tempo style that he prefers, he employed a lot of the same conditioning techniques that he had learned about from studying the way the Navy SEALs train.

“You see how they train the Navy SEALs,” Kelly said. “They squirt them with water, play loud music and do all these other things when they have to perform a task. That’s how we practice. We want to bombard our kids.”

With sports science coordinator Shaun Huls on the staff, the players on the Eagles should prepare to be bombarded with some intense offseason conditioning.

The Philadelphia Eagles re-signed Michael Vick on Monday to a one-year deal for the 2013 season, the team announced. Vick could make as much as $10 million next season, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Citation :
When told last week that Chip Kelly had hired a sports science coordinator on the Eagles’ staff, Oregon running back Kenjon Barner was not the least bit surprised.

“He was huge with science over tradition,” Barner said. “Everything that we did at Oregon was based on science.”

Such as?

“How we practiced, what time we ended practice, what time we started practice, what time we ended meetings, what time we ate, how we rehabbed, just everything was based on science,” Barner explained. “He was huge on science, always looking something up, always bringing some type of fact or number to us in a meeting. He’s huge on that.”

Shaun Huls, the sports science coordinator, was not available when the Eagles introduced their staff earlier this month, so we’ll have to wait to find out what exactly his plans are.

But the “science over tradition” mantra has already made its way to Eagles players. During a phone interview last month, center Jason Kelce mentioned that specific part of Kelly’s philosophy when I asked him about the new head coach.

“I’ll do pretty much anything a coach tells me to do. That’s kind of how I’m wired,” Kelce said. “But I’ve been with both realms of that where you kind of have the old-school coach who says, ‘Listen, I’m doing it this way because it’s the way I’ve always done it. And I’ve done it for 50 years this way and I know it works.’ It’s an awful way to motivate a player.

“You take something and you explain it to him. ‘We’re doing it this way because scientifically it’s been proven to lead to this.’ You give them examples and stuff like that. Naturally, people are going to buy in. People want to be better – not just in football. And if you have a plan set out of things that are proven, it will naturally motivate people more.”

By all accounts, that’s exactly the way Kelly plans to run things.

“The players today do not do it ‘because I told you so,’ ” he said during a coaches’ clinic in 2011. “We do not live in that society anymore. Some of us grew up in it, but it does not work anymore. Players today want to know why. Tell them why. If you do not have a good reason why we do things, we probably should not be doing them.”

Citation :
Sheil Kapadia's All-22 look at what James Casey can bring to the Philadelphia Eagles' offense is, not surprisingly, thorough and worth your time. Sheil examines the various places in the offense in which Casey can line up and has lined up, and breaks down some plays that showcase his versatility. His conclusion:

It’s easy to see why Chip Kelly values Casey. And once again, the key word is versatility. He can line up all over the place, create mismatches pre-snap, catch the ball, block and play special teams.

Signing with the Eagles makes sense for Casey, too. Remember, this is someone who had 111 catches in his final college season at Rice. In Philadelphia, he won’t be used as a traditional fullback much and should get plenty of opportunities as a receiver.

Just how much Casey will be used will depend on what the team’s offensive personnel looks like when the season starts, but Kelly will find a way to make use of his new toy in 2013.

What you heard about Casey when free agency began and several teams were expressing interest in him was a belief that he was under-utilized in Houston and could flourish in an offense less devoted to the run and more willing to move him around in the formation. He can, as Sheil points out, line up anywhere: "out wide, in the slot, in the backfield and as an in-line tight end." The Texans used him mainly as a fullback.

I think the key thing to keep remembering about Kelly is that he probably doesn't yet have a defined sense of how his offense is going to look in Philadelphia and is trying to set himself up with as many options as possible. And that, I would suspect, is what attracted him to Casey. This is a guy who will fit anything Kelly ends up running on offense with the Eagles, and his versatility is the draw. If Kelly looked and saw a player who could be a fullback, tight end, wide receiver, slot receiver or all of the above, sometimes on the same offensive series, it's no surprise he decided to pounce. Heck, right now Kelly doesn't even know who his quarterback is going to be, let alone how he's going to line up the 10 guys around him. A swiss-army-knife guy like Casey is right up the alley of a coach who's got to figure all of this out on the fly. He'll help Kelly solve puzzles.
